Forums - General Discussion - Using a TV as a computer monitor

Has anyone done this? I'm think of completely reworking my bedroom setup after I move and I was thinking of combining my computer and TV setup into one, probably in the ~27" range.

I would be using the HDTV along with my iMac (which will be replaced with a MacBook down the road) and later on, a PC rig will be hooked to the set. Obviously, this requires a 1080p setup but I don't want to go too large or expensive on the set (32" is really pushing the size I want).

So, if you have any experience regarding a setup like this, I'd like to hear it.

I'm waiting for replies too. This subject interests me!

I have this setup right now, but the TV is not my primary monitor. BUT if you want my opinion, don't make the TV your primary monitor, text is hard to read on it...

Other than that, it works like a charm.

What TV do you have and what resolution is set for it on the PC?

Set to 720p on my 27" Samsung SlimFit CRT HDTV. Great TV, but again the text is... not easy to read. Readable, if you squint hard enough...

As rocketpig said, 1080p should be much better with a PC. With a good 1080p TV and using a good connection (HDMI, or VGA perhaps) I'd imagine it's possible to get a perfect PC image on it.

Unfortunately I have no personal experience with this.

Yeah, the TV will have to have DVI inputs for this to work.

I've found it very difficult to do any websurfing, reading, or work on the computer when it was hooked up to my HDTV. At the very least, keep a dual setup so you have an option to switch to a nice 17-19 inch monitor if you need to do any tasks that require reading for long bursts or any writing.

Really? It's that bad, onyx?

If reading is that big of a problem, I'll have to scrap this idea.

You can easily get a DVI-to-HDMI cable off of Amazon. That is what I am using. But at least I am not the only one with the opinion that HDTVs are not the best option for a primary monitor.
