Forums - Gaming - Does anyone buy games or consoles based on sales??

I buy games I like. I don't buy games just because they sell well. I have not bought Nintendogs. I have not bought Grand Theft Auto 3. I have not bought World of Warcraft.

Granted, I don't necessarily dislike those games, I just don't really feel like buying them. Why should anyone buy a game just because it's popular?

sometimes it is a factor.

i.e with the gamecube which I owned after a year or two the gamecube section at retailers was very small and it was rather difficult to located the "A" quality software.

like let me add....say for example i bought Console A...and as years go on i see no games and the console just fails...what should i do??

I buy it if it's Nintendo.

I am Daemon. I am the Word.

Id say quite possibly yes , people are sheep they will buy what others buy. But thats way to complex to explain and there are many variables.

Also the few that really care about sales are the type that have their loyalties set in stone before the product ever enters the market. So while they care about sales the actual sales really have no affect on what they buy.

If you are unsure just wait until the future is more clear.

However, to answer your question, buy the console you have the gut feeling towards. Every console gets good games in the end. Sure you can mock the Gamecube for example, but it actually had some really good games (Melee, Eternal Darkness, Metroid Prime, etc). Sure it didn't have as many as the PS2, but it had plenty.

Not to mention this generation, it will be a close race. It's not like the Wii will get 75% of console sales and the PS3 will become dead in the water, that's unrealistic. It will be closer to 40%, 30%, 30%. And that's not my prediction, thats essentially a market fact.

So buy what console you like, games will come :)

Dude, obviously you never owned an Atari Jaguar.

But I digress, I have bought consoles in the past based on sales. As a kid, I decided to go with the Playstation as opossed to the Sega Saturn. I didn't have a bunch of money to spend on gaming back then, so most decisions I made were quite final. I decided to go with Playstation simply because I saw the shift in momentum towards the platform, and I wanted to have the most options when it came to games.

And for what it is worth, while I did enjoy a healthy ammount of games on the Playstation, I have always regretted that decision.

Sales alone? No.

Sales + good reviews + good word of mouth = maybe I'm missing something.

Did you live in a bizarro universe where the Saturn actually got more good games than the Playstation?  Seriously, that generation I owned an N64, and I sincerely regretted not having a Playstation.  I liked the N64 and all, it just wasn't diverse enough for me (lack of third party support...).  Going with the PS2 if only for the backward compatibility was the best gaming decision I ever made.

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.  The only thing that really worried me was the ether.  There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke

It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...."  Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. Heh, you know actually most of the games I wanted were better on the Saturn.

I was a huge arcade buff, and I remember when Marvel Vs. Street Fighter and Marvel Superheros Vs. Capcom came around on the consoles: The Playstation couldn't hold a candle to them, and had to butcher the entire mechanics of the game for lack of power. There was no tag options for those games! Just assistants!

That would be like playing Tekken Tag, with no tag partner!

The Saturn ran them smoothly and created full arcade ports. Also games like Castlevania Symphony of the Night, still to this very day (including the new Live and PSN releases), had bonus content not available on the Playstation.

It also proves rather interesting when you look at lists such as EGM's top 100 games of all time, as Saturn has lots of games.

Most people, wouldn't have been happy with the likes of the decision I wish I had made. But for myself, Saturn catered to certain tastes that fit my own.
