My friend had this same problem and got his back in less than two weeks. Backing up your stuff is pretty easy if you have a thumb drive.
If you have an external HDD you can back up everything. I believe it is under system options or one of those options categories.
You can redownload most of your PSN games as they are tied to your PS3, so backing up your save files and any media on there is about all you will have to do. You will have to reinstall your games, but that is fairly minor.
