Forums - Sony - Upscaling: the bane of the PS3

Well here I was, excited about LittleBigPlanet for months, and even more excited as I got invited to the beta...

then i realized that it doesn't upscale to 1080. A Sony triple-A title not upscaling.

I own an older HDTV that only supports 1080i and not 720p (and i know a bunch of others around here have the same) and that means the games are downscaled to 480p. For multiplatform titles I might just forgive the issue, but for a Sony backed title with tons of marketing surrounding it, I would expect that this thing would upscale.

Because of my gripes with this game, I decided to check out the whole issue in its entirety. Turns out, this issue is rather big for people like me who cannot afford to buy a new hdtv, and would make me need to buy a 360.

I went to our local game store and looked at two copies of Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, for both the PS3 and the 360. There, clear in black and white, shows the biggest weakness of the PS3: it only supports 720p while the 360 version has "720p, 1080i, and 1080p". And this goes for a whoooole bunch of other titles. In fact, almost all (awaiting verification) 360 games upscale to 1080p.

And then I came across this post that details all the titles that don't support 1080. A huge list. TOO HUGE for such a machine that claims to be SOOOO POWERFUL.

TONS of titles, including some FIRST PARTY Sony games DON'T UPSCALE. Basically, it's either the devs are too lazy to code it, or the PS3 is simply an inferior machine power wise. I mean, come on, the competition was released a full year before, and THE 360 CAN UPSCALE EVERYTHING WHILE THE PS3 CAN'T??

SHAME ON YOU SONY!

(Yes, I am a very disappointed and angry fan of the PS3 but I will still purchase LittleBigPlanet because it's simply awesome, and I won't buy a 360. I'm just mad. Fuming actually.)

Well that is the LBP beta your refering to right ? the final version might come with 1080i . Instead of buying a new 360 why not just buy a new TV ?

That's what annoyed me about DMC4 aswell, it wouldn't upscale to 1080p. So I had to either switch to everything plays 720p or go 1080p and have DMC4 run at 576i on a 46inch HD TV, which looked like crap.

So now all my games play at 720p.

1. The 360 is $200 and a new HDTV is $2000.

2. I shouldn't HAVE TO! Holy hell, how can Sony, makers of electronics, make their machine and TV incompatible with each other!?

3. Buying a 360 would give me more benefits, as I could get to play their exclusives. A TV is just a TV. Why the hell would I buy a new TV just so that my PS3 will play in HD, when its supposed to anyway!? That's dumb.

4. I said in the bottom of the thread that I'm not going to buy a 360. I said I'm just mad at the moment.

That sucks, especially when sony realy push the HD aspect of the ps3. Is it the way the games are coded or is to do with the ps3 firmware? If its firmware, they be able to update it. But I would have thought they would have done it by now if they could.

I know the 360 lets you choose from a few HD standards and apparently more are coming in the fall update.

What about dvd's, is it the same story with them?

Keep in mind that it is only a beta. I'm pretty sure Sony is trying to get 1080 support standard across all 1st/2nd party titles for guys like you. I know they added it into Uncharted at the last minute because of this.

And if you noticed, all the FMV in the LBP beta isn't even 480i. :P

Yeh but with all the extra things you have to get with a 360 you'll end up spending well over $2,000.

if i only want to play games in HD, i really only have to spend around $250 max. care to tell me what i'll be needing to spend $2000? you don't need a bloody hard drive to play any game on the 360. if i want to play gears, i can just buy the game and the arcade version. you're just blowing air out of your ass quite frankly, and its really a dumb comment.

anyways, back on topic. can you please read the last part of the post where i said I'M NOT BUYING A 360, AND I'M JUST MAD AT THE MOMENT? for god's sake.

Was it sarcasm perhaps?

I'm pissed off with 3rd party devs, they're pulling so much crap like this, are they lazy or they just have an agenda? either way they're helping M$ to pull a Windows in the gaming industry, and i as a systems analyst and dev don't want this...
