ok do you need an hdmi cable to watch blue ray in 1080p or can you use a component cables

Most TV's don't support a 1080p signal through component, and I don't think a Blu-Ray player can transmit a 1080p signal through component cables (having difficulty finding actual verification on this though).
HDMI cables are cheaper than component cables, and your signal reliability problems are almost nil, so if you have an HDMI slot, use it. If you are worried about master audio, etc., you might want to make sure you have an HDMI 1.3 compliant cable.

Ok. You can get 1080p with component for games and such. But you can not watch movies since they restrict it. Since HDCP doesnt work over Component only HDMI/DVI does so the PS3 downgrades the movie it. The best you can watch is 1080i with component.
My TV supports 1080p component.
However, dont quote me on this but I believe the media also has the ability to prevent any HD output with out HDMI/DVI. So the best you can do is 480p with component but no movie has implemented this "feature" yet.
Image Constraint Token (ICT) is the name of the flag that is on the media. You can look it up on wiki. In a nut shell if you don't have a secure connection HDCP (HDMI/DVI) and this flag is active. No HD for you.
