you do realise that controller preference is opinion, right? while you think the ps controller is horrible, i think it's the best controller ever made. i think the gamecube controller is horrid, but other people think it's the best too. what i'm basically trying to say is that you can't call the design 'lazy', just because it doesn't suit your needs properly. it's a design, which many people like, that's why sony decided to keep it the way it is.
if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I disagree with your "its prefference" statement. While you are correct that everyones prefferences are different, that speaks nothing of the general quality of a product. Someone may preffer mac and cheese to a gourmet steak dinner...the steak dinner is still a better meal.
In any case, it is widely known that the dualshock controller is trying to be the jack of all trades and works fine for that but as soon as you get in to a perticular type of game where precise and accurate controllers are needed (FPS games, 2D fighters, SHMUPS...etc) the controller is not good at all.

but, you see, that's the thing, all that is jsut your opinion from your expereiences.
that's like me saying that the gamecube controller is badly designed just because i don't like it. i think the dualshock does everything better than every other controller, apart from fps's. that's my opinion, are you going to tell me i'm wrong just because you think that the dualshock is badly designed? the dualshock is not badly designed, that's why it's managed to keep it's exact same design for 3 generations, many people like the controller and think it's the best controller. do they all have bad taste? you just don't like it and i think it's a little unfair that you're trying to pass your opinion on as a fact.

Personal prefference is not a measurement for quality. Many people like Britney spears's music...that doens't make her better than Bethoven. As soon as one starts usign the argument "well i like it best so its best for me"...that argument is lost in my eyes.
In any case I am not saying you are wrong for thinking ps2/3 pads are the best. Theya re durable pads that offer great gamign experience accross many types of games. I'm just saying that its all but been proven that the D-pads suck... they are good controllers otherwise that have some shortcomings.
Read the page below...that is essentially the same Dpad as on the PS2/3 controller. And this was officially released by capcom to "FIX" the dpad on the PSP.

I've played fighting games for 15 years now...been in a few local Street Fighter 3 tournaments as well. The dualshock dpad is generally a laughing stock in those circles...as much as the 360 dpad is. Except no one claims the 360 dpad is amazing...but every sony owner loves their dualshock dpad for some reason.
