I hope we can come up with a rating system that everyone will be happy with; from the last few pages it seems like that might be pretty hard. Looking forward to see what you got, Arcturus.

edit: I should also add that user voting in this forum probably shouldn't be a factor, since people will want to do better and thus (even unconsciously) be biased towards voting high on games they've platinumed.

That was a concern I had with users voting and sharing their opinion on the difficulty of a game, but I think people have been, for the most part, honest on what they think the rating should be for a game.

So there's been a lot of discussion lately about the difficulty rating system we use here in the league. Some don't agree with the ratings that have been assigned to certain games, some don't agree with the method used to determine the ratings, and some would like to see a more accurate rating scale used (a 10 point scale).

I've come up with an alternate difficulty rating system that I'll detail below, and I'd like to get people's feedback on this new system. If the majority of people like the new system, we can switch over to it. If people like the current system, we can stick with it.

This new system would derive all ratings from the average user rated difficulty ratings over at ps3trophies.org. Those ratings would be taken and placed on a ten point scale. I was thinking we could keep the ratings out of 5, but start including half stars (i.e. 2 1/2 stars).

The system would work like this:

Rating from ps3trophies.org
Range Rating Here
 1-2 1
 2-3 1.5
 3-4 2
 4-5 2.5
 5-6 3
 6-7 3.5
 7-8 4
 8-9 4.5
 9-10 5

So, if an average rating over at ps3trophies.org is 4.26, the rating here would be 2.5 stars. Any ratings that fall between 4-5, such as 4.02 and 4.93 would be 2.5 stars here. Here are some examples of how the ratings would turn out:

Current Rating Rating on PS3T.org New Rating
Assassin's Creed 2 2 4.00 2.5
Bioshock 3 6.00 3.5
Burnout 1 3.67 2
CoD Classic 4 7.91 4
CoD MW2 3 6.86 3.5
CoD WaW 3 7.50 4
Dead Space 2 5.37 3
Demon Souls 4 8.05 4.5
Fallout 3 2 4.67 2.5
God of War 2 5.16 3
God of War 2 2 4.65 2.5
God of War 3 2 5.87 3
Hannah Montana 1 1.52 1
InFamous 3 5.00 3
Heavy Rain 2 4.26 2.5
Killzone 2 4 8.13 4.5
Little Big Planet 3 6.45 3.5
MIrror's Edge 4 8.04 4.5
Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 5 9.07 5
Prince of Persia 1 3.96 2
Resident Evil 5 2 5.49 3
Rock Band 2 4 7.80 4
Sonic's Ultimate Gen 1 3.06 2
Terminator Salvatiion 1 2.59 1.5
uncharted 2 5.14 3
Uncharted 2 2 4.65 2.5
WipeOut HD 5 9.27 5

So, what do people think? I'd love to hear from all the regulars here about this new system. Would you prefer we use this new system? Do you see any problems with this new system? Would you prefer we stick with the current system?

I don´t see any problems with the system we r using. but I think that a new one with half stars would be more fair.

but people have to realize that with this new system, games like uncharted or resident evil 5 would be a 3 star, and not 2 star as they are now, and not also a 2.5 stars (as IMHO they should be).

the problem is that a game with a difficult 5 in ps3trophies.org is a game that is in the medium difficult. but here, a game with a grade of 5 would be transformed to a 3 stars, and not 2.5, the half of our system. so IMHO again, and just a suggestion I´d prefer something like:

Range Rating Here
1-2.5         1
2.5 - 3.5    1.5
3.5 - 4.5    2
4.5 - 5.5    2.5
5.5 - 6.5    3
6.5 - 7.5   3.5
7.5 - 8.5   4
8.5 - 9.5   4.5
9.5 - 10    5

this way only games with > 9.5 would be a 5 star here. and a game with 5-5.5 would not become a 3 star. but it´d remain a 2.5 star as they should be. think about it... it´s a little difference, but that changes a lot

Honestly if we compare both systems there aren't many difference except the new one is almost systematically 0.5 to 1 pt higher except for those games that were already at 5 which don't move.
The one issue I have with this is that it makes the difference between rl hard games and others be very little (WipeOut or NGS2 only 0.5 over Demon's Souls ? Come on..).

In the end I thought the rating system was put in place to prevent ppls from only platting easy games and with the changes even relatively easy games would get a fair point score...

Mainly because 1 is almost inexistent on ps3trophies.org as a rating for a game..

PS3-Xbox360 gap : 1.5 millions and going up in PS3 favor !

PS3-Wii gap : 20 millions and going down !

I'm one trophy away from a Heavy rain plat & unfortunately i had to look up 5 of the trophies

But what really makes me upset is that i got 17 of the 18 different epilogues & had to take bitch way out and use a guide on the last one

@Arcturus.

I personally think we should keep the ratings the way they are. With half a star it just looks too messed up and the ratings for some games is wrong like Kyliedog said.

Hmmm....
I do like that the idea of a half star system as it separates the games more. But as Ail said it closes that gap a bit too much with the really easy games on the hard games and I agree. Not many people will vote a 1.

Another potential problem here is what is to stop someone from creating multiple accounts at ps3trophies.org to vote a bunch of 10's and raise a rating up.

Personally I haven't had any problems with Arcturus ratings and my vote is to keep things the way they are and let Arcturus determine the rating.

Unless in a perfect world there was a way in which we as a league could vote. For example, only if you got platinum for the game you could vote and it would auto update the charts for everyone each time an average changes. And everyone would be realistic about it. Nobody would be voting a 5 just to boost their rank. But alas it's not a perfect world... dream on. haha

We got to remind ourselves this league is just for fun and not get so worked up over a rating. Arcturus has done a very good job. Our system has been fine up until a few big debates recently over FFXIII and God of War III. And the more I consider the other options the more I like our current system. Besides how can you denote a half star on the keyboard with the star key? ** 1/2 ...

@Miguel_Zorro
So when are you going to weigh in with your opinion? You got me curious now.

Totally agree with u, the ratings was just fine as it was.

I like the new system as proposed by Arcturus...
