I think they are becoming dumber actually. Good FPS games require some thought...instead the sales are shifting towards...match the color and push a button like games.

By thought you mean: Do I kill it with the rifle or the shotgun? 
I know what you mean but FPS probably isn't the best illustration of a genre that rewards well thought out decisions (as opposed to quick reflexes).

It really depends on the shooter... I have a friend that constantly attacks when playing halo 3. He can't be bored and stopping to strategize or think about his next move is boring to him...his thumb is constantly pushing forward. He has the worst record on halo out of anyone i know.
Unreal Torney 3 however...he does very well in.
