"FF is being eclipsed by other great RPGs... its old news. FF VI, VII, VIII were the apex of FF greatness... kinda a downhil slide since then."

I'll admit it has kind of been a downhill slide for console rpgs since FFXII (not talking about handhelds here or the Persona series on PS2); however, once FFXIII is released you will see the return of World's Greatest RPG Series as FFXIII will be yet another FF that gets review scores in the 9.5-10 range, that demonstrates the true power of epic rpgs once again, and that reveals all these sub 8.5 review games like Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon, Infinite Undiscovery, Tales of Vesperia, etc, as the placeholders that they always are in every console generation prior to the release of that generation's first Final Fantasy.

Lost Odyssey only manages to get a 79% on gamerankings but main FF games manage to get in the Early 90% tile.  What do critcs love about FF that it makes them not like LO as much?

Advertising budget for their site.  I'm not joking.

...and I own every FF except FF3, if you were wondering.  At this point, I won't even buy FF13 unless its 90% or greater in the reviews.

Final Fantasy PEAKED at VI, so no it's not important anymore. Final Fantasy VII only sold on shock value. "Oh my god, a 3-D Final Fantasy not on a Nintendo Console? The world is ending!"

Then why did FFVIII and FFX sell 8M+

Also, FFIX, X-2 and XII with 5M+ is hardly poor sales

FFXIII will sell at least 7M on the PS3/360

Because games can sell purely on name and not quality.  Seriously, the FF games over the last, what, 10 years have sucked pretty hard.  They only sell because people think they're supposed to think they're awesome.

Are you actually saying that ff 8,9 and 10 and 12 sucked? Compared to what? just a week a ago i tried space siege, now that sucked, even dungeon siege sucked, diablo got boring fast, and the only good tolkien-esc game that is good is oblivion.

You are either ignorant or too one sided, cuz those final fantasy games are leagues ahead of the vast majority of games.

Well, IX was good but I'm pretty sure that was an accident.

  • VIII - worst of the whole series.  The story wasn't anything special and I'm sure Keanu Reeves would do a wonderful job playing the part of Squall.
  • X - It wasn't bad but it wasn't good either.  I never really felt anything for the characters, the story wasn't anything special at all, and all in all the game just really wasn't that memorable.
  • XII - Almost as bad as VIII.  People keep telling me it gets better the further you get into it but I've tried it on two seperate occasions and stopped at about 16 or so hours both times because I just couldn't take anymore.  The story was terrible and the characters were just so bad.

@Liar Pokemon, Kingdom Hearts, and Dragon Quest are all Jrpgs series with one game passing 5mln(pokemon passes 10mln most of the time.)

You didn't find FFX memorable in anyway.  Believe me, a lot of people are going to hate you as many consider FFX to be one of the Best post VII FF games.

I think Final Fantasy does its characters very well and it has top notch production value. I end up caring about protagonist, supporting characters and even the villains. Which is another thing, Final Fantasy generally has awesome villains. I just find myself more engrossed into the world. (which i talk about in my recent post about Persona 3)

Part of it might also be that I was a teenager when I played all 7,8,9,10,12 and related to the angst.

In LO I liked the story and it had good production, but I didn't find the characters overly-interesting, more of just pieces to move the story along .
I don't think it's a coicidence that my least favorite FF is IX and that I found the characters of FFIX to be the least interesting. I also felt FFIX had the weakest Villain.

"Advertising budget."

Production value is more like it. Production value always used impeccably. Other rpgs just don't have the same amount of polish that Square almost always brings to their games. The difference with Lost Odyssey is that Sakaguchi was still living in 2001 when he went about making it. However, FFXII had already moved the bar beyond that and no other rpg since has done so. Star Ocean 4 could (I think it will get a 9 at least). But FFXIII certainly will.

My most anticipated games:  Whatever Hideo Kojima is going to do next, Final Fantasy XIII, Final Fantasy Versus XIII, Gran Turismo 5, Alan Wake, Wii Sports Resort.  Cave Story Wiiware.

How are the characters suppose to be "overly interesting"?  Doesn't LO's characters drive the game's story?

Balthier > Most FF cast, especially FFVI.  *Spoilers for XII, kinda*  Basch becomes a bad ass by the end of the game *End of spoilers*

Only thing I hated about VIII was the draw system.... argh >.>

As for FFX: Blitz Ball = best mini game
