Forums - Gaming - Is Final Fantasy important anymore?

umm. why does it seem that everyone hated ff XII? i understand that the end of the game was a bit anti-climactic, but they were going with a different take on things and not the usual "save the world" which i love. however, they did do the classic boy from nothing is suddenly bad ass aka vaan... but overall i thought the game was solid.

For me as a Gamer - of course. It's still my fav. series.

For the Japanese Gaming community - yes. It's still one of the most popular gaming series around in the region. We all know that FF XIII will sell the most number of PS3s in a given week in Japan.

For the American / Euro Gaming community - it is much more niche than it used to be because the gaming community has expanded. Right now Gran Turismo rules the roost in Europe while Halo rules the roost in the US. 10 years ago, I would say the FF was a very important game in the gaming culture.

"Naturally the common people don't want war: Neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, IT IS THE LEADERS of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is TELL THEM THEY ARE BEING ATTACKED, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. IT WORKS THE SAME IN ANY COUNTRY."  --Hermann Goering, leading Nazi party member, at the Nuremberg War Crime Trials

Conservatives:  Pushing for a small enough government to be a guest in your living room, or even better - your uterus.

X-2 also had excellent girls. I'll take Yuna, Pain, and Rikku over Bastilla Shan any day.

My most anticipated games:  Whatever Hideo Kojima is going to do next, Final Fantasy XIII, Final Fantasy Versus XIII, Gran Turismo 5, Alan Wake, Wii Sports Resort.  Cave Story Wiiware.

now i can easily bash WoW but that would most likely start in a flame war, given its more popular. but if you ever gave ffxi another run you would most likely love it.

Yes, bashing me would not end well.

Also, FFXI is garbage.  The animations are stiff, the interface is poor, the community is practically non-existant, and the control setup is so different from most modern PC games that it's painfully obvious that SE was just making it up as they went along.  I did the free month trial and hated it.

Eh the reason i hated ff xII was the lousy gambit system and the fighting style, I mean something was just half assed there. I didn't like the auto pilot vibe it was giving me. The graphics were great looking, but that in my opinion was about all it had going for it. The story made me lose interest after awhile, and i never picked up or finished the game...this was a first for me with the series. Im hoping XIII will make up for XI,XII and X-2.

As for Final Fantasy being important, it certainly is a still big player, not as much on home consoles right now, but on the DS lite, it's make leaps and bonds above other games.

WHAT!?

I can understand most gripes about FFXI as that is a game that is not for everyone.  Takes too much time, being forced to group, slow, hard, ect.  I can handle all those but you didn't like community?  That's just insane!

That game is all about the community and when you play things like World of warcraft with absolutely no community (I feel like I'm playing a single player MMO) it's just so different.  It's try you have elitist jerks in FFXI but for the most part the community in that game is incredibly because it's so heavily focused on community.

FFXI was design for console, then they decided halfway through production to make it available on PC due to high costs on the PS2.  You can also make it like every other PC game by switching the keyboard layout.

As for game animation, it's much better than WoW's by far.  Not saying WoW is a very terrible game, it's just that every move looks identicle in WoW.  Cast a spell and some sort of light pops up over the mob for massive damage!

Also, bitching about a MMO you played a long time ago = fail.  MMO's change over the years, greatly.  Best example: FFXI

There was no community.  Just about every area felt like a ghost town.  I was on the Titan server if that makes a difference.

The free trial was 2 months ago.  Don't talk about things when you don't know all the details.

I've never played WoW though so I'll refrain from commenting on that.

I just know that FFXI was a boring and disappointing experience for me.

Yeah, the 3 opening towns (Bastok, Windurst, and San'Doria) are all pretty dead unless you're near the auction house or mog house entrance because most players generally stay in Jueno or one of the outland towns when they go to towns.  About the only time you're going to see large amounts of players in those three towns is during one of the holiday events or they're about to do a Dynamis run.

Once you get outside that opening area though, there are a lot of people (or were, haven't played in well over a year now).  Sadly there's just not a lot of a reason to go to those beginning areas once you get to level 20 or so.

Even when you hit level 10 you're probably going to spend more time in Selbina (or is it Mhuara?  It's the one by the dunes) than in the opening towns.  You'll only make the occasional trip back to Bastok to make a supply run and that's about it.

And once you hit 20 and go for your first run to Jueno, now that's fun.  You have to run through a pretty high level (for your level at least) zone and it can get interesting depending on what direction you come from.
