Forums - Microsoft - 360 HDMI converter arrives in UK - HDMI > COMPONENT?

@jerseyboy
Does the PS3 output 1080p via component? I have one but seeing as how my component connections are filled and I have HDMI to spare I've never checked myself. I know the 360 will output 1080p with component and if you can actually tell a difference between HDMI and component more power to you. I've had both up to my display and they look identical to me.

If Mad Catz wants to charge a ridiculous amount for something relatively useless then more power to them. If I was jonesing that bad you could always hook up via VGA for about $20. Almost all TV's nowadays have VGA connections and they are hardly used.

That's pretty cool I guess, but would it really make all that difference other than getting rid of some wires?

Yep, it won't do dick for IQ. It's just modifying the analog output. It might be slightly worth it if there's something like 10+ meters between your 360 and TV set.

@ Jason-- The PS3 has 1080p over HDMI only.

I'd say something about sony being a big backer of HDMI for it to be the de-facto HD connection and how this is another example of how they used the ps3 as leverage for sony policies while crippling consumer choice in the process...

@Bitmap Frogs

I think they also supported it due to signal encryption on the Blu-Ray format.

Sony is not alone in this, HD-DVD manufacturers also required an HDMI connection if i'm not mistaken?

Actually the PS3 has no problems outputting via component in 1080p, I've had mine setup that way.  However alot of the time Hdmi will come out looking better.  I think what you're thinking of is that Blu-ray movies don't allow this, and instead blu-ray movies only output in '1080i' Which if your tv is 1080p capable will deinterlace it and it will come out almost identical.

This kit is kinda useless. Bought it on eBay for $50ish shipped for my old 360 and regreted it. Quality wise it was barely a improvement over component, and when I got my new Elite with HDMI it actually looked better then the convertor. I'm selling it back on eBay once I'm able to file for a final credit value (damn non paying bidders!).

It's just that simple.

Seems I had it confused.

I would argue that there's a substantial difference between true progressive and interlaced-then-deinterlaced but I'm nitpicky about those things.
