I think you mean SO wasn't a big series until relatively recently. The franchise as a whole may have only sold 2.8 million copies WW. However, 1.3 million of those copies are SO3 alone. I think this could be do to the fact that Star Ocean has gained more esteem in the West in the past few years.

 

BTW, wasn't Okami very high on that list? And didn't that same game bomb?

Also, games are generally at their highest hype levels just before and just after they are released and since GTAIV's Japanese release is closer than SO4's release, well, I think you can figure out the rest.

It's easier to get excited for a game that's a month away from release versus a "winter 09" release.

Not only this, GTA is actually popular in Japan. SA sold around 400,000 copies.

Actually, SO4 is a Spring 2009 release(and in Japan, NA, and Europe at the same time I might add).

People notice when GTA:SA sells 400K in Japan while those same people don't acknowledge that SO3 sold 740K in the US
