Forums - Sony - Why the 10-year plan is feasible...

^But if you are discussing a 10-year plan for the PS3, to ignore the Wii is ... well, foolish to the point that Spankey's PS2/PS3 remark looks wise.

One of the many reasons I like about Sony is that their consoles lasts more than 7 years, PS1 & PS2 has easily surpass it and no doubt PS3 will follow.
Then we have that evil corrupt corporation that is Microsoft. If M$ was helm of console industry, would you want to buy next generation consoles every 3 years? no you wouldn't *cough* M$ OS *cough*
Screw them. Hence why I boycott them!

M$ Great for hurting your wallet and giving you hassles,
whereas Sony is great value for the long run and great for the gaming industry as what Pristine20 pointed out in #3.

So let hope Sony achieve their goal, cause it would give a win-win to games industry and gamers.

I don't understand how people can say "oh the past trends of Sony consoles show they last more than 7 years" when there have only been 2 consoles that have managed it, both of them were massively successful before their main rivals even launched (I say it like that because PS1 had a relatively slow start for a success, but it sped up in time for the N64 launch)

Especially odd that they use a "past trend" like that while ignoring more important trends like: most powerful console never sells the most nor lasts the longest, or that the sales in the first couple of years determine the general outcome.

5. FIRMWARE. That's right. This is one of the single most important things. Think about the ps2 gen. The ps2 you bought at launch still has the same functionality as the ps2 people are buying now because it was not possible to update the functionality of the system without releasing entirely new hardware. Now, fast forward to the ps3 gen. Think of the XMB and its functionality at launch and compare it to what we have now. It feels like we are already using ps4. Someone posted a link that I can't remember now where it was stated in the article that there is still lots of room for updates in the ps3 built in flash drive. They stated that it isn't even up to half way full yet with the massive updates the sytem has gone through. There leaves a lot of hope for the future when this data could be compressible. Add that to the fact that functionality not power has become the new trend and we may have a real long-lasting system on our hands.

So would the 360 be equivalent to the PS4 since day one since it has had everything the XMB currently has, and more, since launch?

Anyways, there is no way that the PS3 will still be the main Sony console in 2016. They might still sell new consoles, and it will likely still be supported, but there is no way it would be the lead system.

The ps3 also had things the 360 didn't have like HDMI support and blu ray when it launched. Media center capabilities are a 3rd but I'm not exactly sure if the 360 has that or not. You sentiment is also why M$ too may be unwilling to jump headfirst into the 360's successor too soon except they're hell bent on taking on nintendo this time around. The only limitations on the 360 I can think of is DVD which may not be all that important because dowloadable full game service is possible with the 360 as is. New hardware is unnecessary.

DVD is an extreme limitation, and the fact that not every 360 has a harddrive is another extreme limitation that we are already beginning to feel the effects of.

IMVHO, as it's obvious that they cannot add Wii-like features to PS3, they must focus on being different from it and try to get the best they can from this: this wouldn't be ignoring Wii, but simply admitting where it is strongest and where instead competition can still happen.
