FACTS
Launch Plans - http://news.cnet.com/Let-the-PS3-games-begin/2008-1043_3-6110352.html “Hirai: Well, I think that if you look at the history of the way we've managed our console business, we always try to hit a 10-year life cycle.” Crytek readies Next-Gen CryEngine 3 - expecting PS4 to hit in 2011/2012 http://www.edge-online.com/news/gc-asia-cryengine-3-readied-playstation-4 Forum discussion on this matter http://vgchartz.com/forum/thread.php?id=42461 My take on this: Note that the launch date for the Playstation 2 was March 4, 2000 in Japan while the Playstation 3 launched on November 11, 2006 in Japan. That’s over six and a half year’s difference which may suggest a launch for the Playstation 4 in late 2012/Early-mid 2013.RUMOURS
Sony taking a more integrated approach to their hardware development? In Jack’s words, “we know what we’re doing,” but it’s going to take a long time to atone for past missteps. In essence, as Tretton says, the PS3 was not developed in collaboration between the two teams. As a result of this, the software team has been cleaning up the mess made by the hardware team for years. FACTS
Captain Obvious (720 indeed in development) Q: What’s the planning cycle?A: We start thinking about the next generation before we shipped the Xbox 360. It doesn’t start with a date. It starts way upstream with silicon development. From that comes a series of data points. You start making early technology choices. It’s an evolving thing. Stuff doesn’t become concrete until you get inside a window of when you have to ship, more than 18 months or so out. Microsoft to launch the XBOX 720 before all other next generation consoles? Q: Do you want to be first with the next one, too?
A: Too early to tell. Our view is we will be selling Xbox 360 for a long time. We are always working on new technologies. We have people working on those. People ask me how many people I have working on the next generation. On the one hand, it’s everybody. On the other, it’s nobody. People are continuously working on new technology.

Captain Obvious strikes again! (Nintendo hard at work on their next console) "We are always preparing for the next hardware," Iwata says. "We are under development. … But the hardware is a kind of box that consumers reluctantly buy in order to play our games." The Wii 2 will most likely be an evolution of the Wii "Every hardware needs some revolutionary features," Iwata says. "This time around, it happened to be we had a revolutionary user interface. Will it be the same for the next generation? I really can't tell. "It's natural for the current customer to expect Nintendo is going to once again do something different," he continues. "If the people are expecting so many different things from Nintendo, it's going to be difficult for us to go beyond that expectation again." Wii 2 going High Definition Miyamoto explained that the number of HDTV's in homes is "really not that high, yet. Of course I think five years down the road it would be pretty much a given that Nintendo would create an HD system, but right now the predominant television set in the world is a non-HD set."Miyamoto added: "We thought it would be better to create a system that allows you to interact with any TV set you have in your home in an entirely new, different way, and even kind of turn that into a toy for your TV that anyone can pick up, interact with and enjoy - rather than only the people who have a very high-tech, specific kind of TV set." http://au.wii.ign.com/articles/707/707800p1.html
