Forums - Sony - Do you expect the PS3 to, eventually, 'pull a PSP' in Japan?

I don't see this happening. The PS3 has had plenty of software support so far, and by the time the PS3 drops to PS2 prices, it'll be 2012 and the 720/Wii Too will be out.

Wii has more 20 million sellers than PS3 has 5 million sellers.

The reason the PSP was so successful with Monster Hunter is because, at least from what I know, it's a huge online game that you can take with you anywhere. Sony is going to need something highly interactive, convenient, and nearly impossible to find elsewhere to attract the average Japanese consumer to the PS3. I just don't see FF13 doing that, at least not for more than 1 or 2 weeks. LittleBigPlanet looks capable, but I'm not exactly sure of how the Japanese public would receive it.

Japan may actually be LBP's highest-potential area.  The levels are (relatively) short little adventures, the Sackboys are cute, and the created content will let them be as crazy as they want to be.  And the whole country is online.

But I could be wrong; see my sig (bolded part).

As for the OP:  maybe.  I don't see any justification for anyone to say "definitely yes", but with FFXIII still in the wings and games like LBP as unknown factors, I don't think there's enough reason to say "definitely not" either.

Not really no. PSP pulled a PSP because of it's many many features and being a portable.

Blu-Ray is already huge in japan and it's not having much effect. I can't see any of PS3's other features making a big turnaround like Skype did for the PS3.

Only hope is that GT5 has a MH3 pull... though... it seems unlikely.

Or FF13.  It'll be interesting to see how many of the casual FF owners are willing to pay out for the PS3.

The GameCube had Mario and Zelda, the former of which is the most well known IP in gaming.

in japan: Dragon Quest VIII>= FF X > mario>=zelda.

in the gamecube era.

both windwaker and mario didn't sold more tha 0.89 millions in japan.

not a single final fantasy main series have sold less than a million

That's partially due to the GC not selling well, obviously. For the same reason, Final Fantasy XIII has a good shot at being the worst selling main FF since the SNES (in Japan).

Just having a few big hit titles (or having the biggest, even) does not ensure the console will do well. The N64 was proof of this. As long as it's easier and more profitable for third parties in Japan to develop on *3* other consoles - the DS, PSP, and Wii - the PS3 will not be seeing much support. I just don't think there's enough room for two handhelds AND two home consoles in Japan.

the gamecube didn't have final fantasy xiii, a level 5 exclusive (developers of dragon quest!) and versus, to save it ass.
sony its not worried about japan at least not before 2009.

360 only have SO4 left, which is likely to get a ps3 port.

It's a pity then that the DS has Dragon Quest this generation ;)

i would have love it to see it like naruto ninja storms with  hd graphics, but also i will be able to play it on my DS =)

its final fantasy xiii, in japan with gran turismo 5 are going to be the biggest hardware pusher, it won't sell never like mario or zelda in the gamecube era. never.

even crisis core: a spinoff sold more than 700k there, with high piracy.

the gamecube didn't sold well because it was a kiddy image, not matter being cheaper than the ps2.

And not a single Super Mario sold less than a million in Japan until the GameCube.  SM64 sold 1.92 million in Japan alone.

I do agree that the ps3 will probably make a comeback in Japan at some point (see my first post in this thread), but it probably won't happen because of a single game (or two).

Yeah...

of the course the ps3 will do a psp in japan, it will.

FFVXIII
FFXIII
WKC
EyePet
Tekken
LBP

and other various games, i mean why would it not do well in japan with all of those ip's

It will get a small spike from all of them and then it will return to normal sales, just like it has with all of this gen with these fanboys lists of 'next big hope' game lists. Don't expect a price drop till 2010 either.

In my opinion the N64 was not just the best console of the 5th gen but, to this day the best console ever created!

^ Wrong, FFXIII will get a BIG spike.  And I fully expect a price drop before 2010.
