I would not say they are like Americans and Westerners. I will say that the majority of Muslims are not extremists and do not advocate using terrorism.

It is somewhat specious to say some of the biggest democracies are Muslim. Malaysia is in a transitional phase right now and it needs to figure out certain issues before it can be considered a legitimate democracy. Religious and ethnic freedoms needs to be expanded and some of the other issues need to be changed. One such issue is the constitutional requirement that all ethnic Malays must be a Muslim. Indonesia is a better example of a Muslim-majority nation that is approaching legitimate democracy. The resignation of Suharto and the subsequent presidential elections are a promising sign. If you couple that with the fact that the government respects religious freedoms and that inter-faith conflicts have never been a major problem, I would say Indonesia is a perfect example of Muslims living in peace with non-Muslims.
