These are the four most recent polls on realclearpoltics.com.  Gallup and Rasmussen are generally the best guidelines to go by.  The Rasmussen poll had McCain at +1 a few days ago.  The Gallup poll has held at +5.

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.  The only thing that really worried me was the ether.  There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke

It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...."  Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. That's an assessment based off one poll (coincidentally the highest poll for McCain out of these four, the Gallup), but yes, his stock with independents has definitely gone up.  But people are fickle and change their mind quickly.  And the election is about 2 months away.  A lot could change to either benefit or hurt either candidate in that time period.

I could be wrong, but I suspect that the silent majority of voters in the United States are not that strongly for or against either candidate at the moment and there can be quite a bit of variation in the polls.

Absolutely, which is why I always go off of averages to make the claim stronger.  The poll system is flawed at best.

But anyone who is surprised by McCain's numbers slowly dipping has not really paid any attention to how this happens after just about every convention prior to this one.  It is normal and to be expected.

Yeah, that's my feeling, too. Have you seen the approval ratings of the candidates? They're both higher than the past few elections.

I think the American public is relieved to not have to choose between a douche and turd sandwich again this election year.

Polls are misleading. A lot of people say that they will vote for Obama because they don't want to be seen as racist, and then it turns out that the black candidate loses.

Never thought this would be a close race, this really suprises me.

For America's and the world's sake, I hope Obama wins.

But we shouldnt leave out the fact that many polls have a well-documented racial bias. Not racist against Obama, but racist towards Obama. Many white voters feel 'racist' if they support a white candidate over a black candidate, so they are more likely to tell other humans (pollsters) that they support the black candidate but turn around and vote for the white candidate during the secret ballot. From what I understand this accounts for a small percentage difference between polls and actual election results.

New Fox News poll has McCain up by +3.  Rest of polls have been updated with today's info.
