I think that if AoE were going to survive as a series, and any old dev team could have pulled it off, MS would have closed Ensemble the day after they realized AoE was wildly popular, and farmed the game out to a cheaper studio somewhere in the former Eastern Bloc.
Truly disheartening, I loved the AoE series and hope that it continues with a new team. The gaming industry is a cut-throat business in many ways and this is unfortunate. I wish only the best for the former Ensemble studios and its employees and hope that it has future success.

perhaps its possible that this "leadership team" will still be able to do them then.

We don't provide the 'easy to program for' console that they [developers] want, because 'easy to program for' means that anybody will be able to take advantage of pretty much what the hardware can do, so the question is what do you do for the rest of the nine and half years? It's a learning process. - SCEI president Kaz Hirai
It's a virus where you buy it and you play it with your friends and they're like, "Oh my God that's so cool, I'm gonna go buy it." So you stop playing it after two months, but they buy it and they stop playing it after two months but they've showed it to someone else who then go out and buy it and so on. Everyone I know bought one and nobody turns it on. - Epic Games president Mike Capps
We have a real culture of thrift. The goal that I had in bringing a lot of the packaged goods folks into Activision about 10 years ago was to take all the fun out of making video games. - Activision CEO Bobby Kotick

Now that I've calmed down a bit, Microsoft are a bunch of idiots.
1. Ensemble Studios was a great studio. The Age series has sold over 20 million to date, resulting in a lot of profit for Microsoft.
2. First they let BioWare and Bizarre get eaten up by larger publishers, killing their second party, then they let Bungie go independent (though at least they're still second party), then they ignored Itigaki when he became a free agent (no more NG or DOA, but at least they could've gotten something else from the man), and now this.
With 90% of all third party titles going multiplat (almost 100%, if you count timed exclusives like Eternal Sonata), this is a horrible position for MS to be in.
