With the News of Samsung and the 5 year Blu-Ray disc (<-Link). It seems like some people are getting upset or  offended, as if they own the rights to Blu-Ray or something.

I'm just going to share my opinion on the matter, now I must warn you I tend to ramble, I can spell somewhat good, but my grammar/punctuation sucks Donkey D...... so I warn you now and at the end of this post.. I forget.

New technology is comes out what seems like every month, Blu-Ray might be gone in less then 5 years.

Prices are a big factor in sales, of course.

Look at DvD's, buying blank 100 count Dual Layer DvD's go for $89-$130 US. (roughly)

DvD's been out for more then 10 years and it still cost this much...

Now look at a Blank Duel Layer Blu-Ray : $43.99-$79.99 US for 1, just 1 disc. yes i know it's still early... but

By the time Blu-ray Blank Discs become affordable there will be something bigger, better, cheaper, even Digital.

I read people talking about the Size of the Blu-Ray is key like "200gig Blu-Ray ftw"  well... how much will that cost you?  More then a 200gig Hard Drive, in case your wondering. Not to mention with External 1TB Hard Drives getting cheap... well...

Some history talk be warned:

VHS came out in the 70's (1977 US Homes),  then a year later (1978) brought Discovision that turned into Lazerdisc in the mid 80's... but it was large and very expensive .

Then came 1995 (18 years after VHS hit US Homes) the DvD: small like a CD, skip scenes, last forever, nice picture, and wasn't that expensive in comparison to Lazerdisc.

It was very appealing in comparison to the VHS: book size, loses quality, couldn't upgrade for better picture, "Please be kind rewind" bla, bla, bla,....

Then just 10 years later comes Blu-Ray: Same Size as a DvD, Hi-Def Quality, last forever, you know....

(notice how time gets shorter and shorter between formats)

But... what about the appeal to make the DvD consumer change to Blu-Ray? It certainly doesn't have the appeal effect like VHS to DvD.

I mean BR has a nice ass picture but when you walk into a store you see a BR player (not that cheap, but getting cheap) with $24.95-$39.99 Blu-Ray Movies sitting next to it.

And then you see a DvD-Upscaling Player (cheap) and next to it the Mighty $5.00 DvD Bin..

Now the average consumer see's this concept and to save money, they go with what makes sense.

They figure "I'll wait for the Players and Movies to get cheaper, then I'll buy" they are also intrigued by the upscaling DvD player, as they didn't know the DvD's could be upscaled to 1080p and their DvD collection NOW can have new life.

This is one of the reasons why BR movies sales have been going down or not as good as it should sense it won the HD war.

People that wanted the HD War to end were MORONS...

The 2 companies were going at it left and right, "here buy this and get these free movies" "no buy our player and get these free movies"

The war should have went on longer to Force cheaper prices to the consumer but Big Corp (corporation) doesn't have to at this point.

This is why competition is good, or I should say KEY.

Now watch the coming up months, BR is still competing for the thrown with DvD in a LESS competitive way, so you will see some deals coming... but also keep in mind that they are Holiday Deals and if HD-DvDs were still around our Hi-Def movies and players would be cheaper.

I think I kind strayed from my point...

Anyhoo...

New Technology is coming out every month like I stated above, and with Digital Distribution at our finger tips (take movies with you on the go) it's whats next in our future.

People say they want physical objects in there hand when they buy it ( I'm one of them)... but the Corporations will go the rout that sells, and with Games Selling well though download (PS3, Wii, 360,) and music and movies sales on the RISE through downloads it doesn't look like it's going to slow down anytime soon. Look at DVR's and TiVo sales.

O lets not forget about the Green Peace and Tree Hugger people that want all Plastic to come to an end.. lol

You made alot of good points. I currently own 43 HD-DVD, 12 Blu-Ray and over 900 DVDs. I've been slowly returning to the DVD purchasing because of the price.

I refuse to purchase DVD's because they are too easy to pirate. What you will see studios do eventually is what they did with VHS and DVD, earlier releases for Blu-Ray and better features on Blu-Ray discs than on the DVD.

Not everyone has to want Blu-Ray to win for it to happen. Not everyone wanted DVD to take over, and look where we are at now.

I own a PS3, which plays Blu-ray but....i dont have the urge to buy a film on blu-ray if its on the much cheaper dvd....

I dont own one blu-ray film!

Just out of curiosity.. are you a consumer or a retailer ?
