FFVI is by the best of the series. Sorry to tell you but if you decide to play the others it's all downhill (but that isn't a bad thing in all the games cases).

People have been hailing FFVI as the best in the series since it came out over a decade ago. FFVII didn't change that, not with certain crowds.

How would fan reactions make a game better or worse, exactly? Does a rabid fandom somehow lower the real quality of a game? I submit not.

6 is the best.

actually 4-5-6 are probably my favorite ones, the PS ones have just not made the same impact on me (though I still played all of them and loved them, same goes for the gameboy ones). (played 5 as a fan translated rom on PC ^^ that was fun :p)

Actually there are plenty of SNES RPGs that I would put on par with the PS FFs (I prefered the chibi graphics).

i'd have to say FFIX was my favorite. i loved the characters and the story. it was really different. VI is great tho. i consider it the first FF game to really make an impact (i only consider 4,6,7,8,9,10 to be truley great, while 1,2,3,5,11 and 12 were just okay. hated 12...)

In my personal opinion it stands right next to VII followed closely by IX (haven't played IV yet)
But no matter which FF you play, they are all very good. Only when you compare them with eachother you might say some are slightly less awesome...

I don't think you can say that. Final Fantasy Mystiq Quest sucked ass. Final Fantasy X-2 was horrible. Final Fantasy X was way to freaking linear, but ok, that game was somewhat fun so I'm not saying it sucked. So you can definitely say that some FFs are way worse and not awesome at all.

And yes, FF3 for us American folks, was definitely the best FF ever. 9 deserves props for being the 2nd best and I put 8 as #3 on my list.

I'm amazed so many people agree. I'm also not one who thinks the rest of the series sucks, as I like FFX about as much as FFVI, and the PSX games all have their place. I haven't played the older FF's in forever though, once I get a DS I'll see if FFIV is better than I remember.

edit: I thought FFX-2 was also great for what it was, oh well
