I don't think L4D is going to burn any system you get. Keep in mind it's running on the Source engine which is a pretty old engine at this point.
I can play TF2 and Portal (probably the same requirements) max settings on my gimpy 2nd system which is a 3500 AMD 1 gig of RAM and something like 8600 gfx card. Also it's AGP :P On my main system it doesn't even register a blip for resource usage. I'd worry more about StarCraft 2 or the higher end games (technologically speaking) coming out.
I wish I could help you find a laptop, but I've never kept up with PCs in that area.
