Forums - General - The Who we can compare to Hitler thread

Alright, I think it's time for another reminder that comparing a politician you don't agree with to Hitler is tantamount to standing on a street corner screaming that the world will end if you don't wear your tinfoil hat. That is to say, no one will take you seriously.

So I went on down to adultlearn.com and found a handy little chart of dictators and their death tolls. While only Stalin has bested Hitler's monstrous death toll, I think any of these man can be compared to Hitler on some level.

Anyone not on this chart, you should probably not compare to Hitler.

Discuss.

P.S. If there are errors in this chart I apologize. I'm mainly just doing this for the "you're Hitler" crowd.

I vote for Nixon. That guy abused power like nobody's business. At least he didn't slaughter people though.

Stalin was worse than Hitler, so if anyone should be a measuring stick of absolute looniness it is him.

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.  The only thing that really worried me was the ether.  There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke

It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...."  Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. Thompson

You forgot Master D from Bionic Commando.

Nixon was a donkey's ass.

But he sure ain't no Hitler.

You missed Videla from Argentina, 30000 people kidnapped and executed, most Latin America dictators should be there too (Pinochet, Stroessner, etc)

Source (wiki)

"According to estimates, at least 8,960 and up to about 30,000 Argentinians were subject to forced disappearance (desaparecidos) and most probably killed; many were illegally detained and tortured, and others went into exile."

My vote goes to Kefka. ;)

OT:
I don't think the death toll alone should be the indicator which leader(not all lunatic politicians were non-elected dictators)was/is the worst.
The methods of their leadership are a far more important factor.
But overall i think that those kind of comparisons are simplifying and not very eloquent.

Thats a crappy list.  Why are civil wars on there, as if the leaders killed people themselves in the political turmoil.  Why are Abraham Lincoln and Jefferson Davis not on this list?

If Ho Chi Minh is on that list then Richard Nixon and several other Americans should be on that list.  Ho Chi Minh was loved by Vietnam and the United States blocked a nationwide vote that would had determined their leader (Eisenhower stated that Ho Chi Minh would win 90 percent of the vote if it was conducted).

Did Germany and Russia kill a million people each during World War I that wasn't directly involved with the war itself?  I see they glossed over the British, French, and Americans.

Like I said, it's probably not a great list. Just trying to point out that unless you're a dictator responsible for the deliberate slaughter of your own people, Hitler comparisons really don't work.

Just a correction on the chart. Hitler was a socialist. In fact, Nazi = National Socialist. The only fascist policies he pursued were the gov't control of factories during the war time.

Instead of seeking to convince others, we can be open to changing our own minds, and seek out information that contradicts our own steadfast point of view. Maybe it’ll turn out that those who disagree with you actually have a solid grasp of the facts. There’s a slight possibility that, after all, you’re the one who’s wrong.
