Forums - General - thinking russia is the badguy in ossetia is like saying ...

I don't think trivialization of the issues at hand are a good thing. All I know, is that its a very serious situation - and a lot of people have lost their lives.

All the recent steps the US have taken to gain influence in the region (missile shield, strong allies of Georgia) were bound to antagonize Russia - and were done without enough dialog ("lets ignore them, and see what happens").

Well, the results were predictable enough - Russia will take only so much, then made a huge statement amounting to "Don't fuck with us, we take these measures in our backyard seriously".

It would be similar to Russia establishing "strong political and economic" ties with Cuba, with political visits - or even building a missile base there. Measures that would all cause outrage in the US.

...

I only hope nothing (else) too serious happens between now and the US presidential election - and that the new president (whoever that is) goes back to more dialog, and less teasing where Russia in concerned.

but thats not true at all.   The US tried numerous times.  They even said the russians could have access to the missile shield facilities.  Russia never truly wanted to chat about anything.  The missile shield isnt even a threat to them.   It will have 10 interceptor missiles.  Emperor Putin just wants to cause scenes and play victim so he can pretend to have a reason when he acts like an ass.

thinking russia is the badguy in ossetia is like saying Saddam/Irak had biological weapons. Or like saying invading afghanistan was a good thing.

I think if you believe that you don't have a firm grip of the history of the area.

whats do you think is wrong? because i saw you making another statement in that russia thread which was total bull

First off, reports show the Russians breaking the treaty first by using 180 MM guns in the shellings on the 6th.

Second off, Georgians and Ossetians lived together peacefully until the russians annexed georgia and starting stirring things up racially to prevent uprisings.

Cauising mistrust against races is one of the easiest ways to protect yourself from uprisings... and it's something the russians used in a lot of annexed areas.

I think Afghanistan started good and failed.
I think Iraq started bad and failed harder.

I think immediately painting Russia as the bad guy is really weird, considering Russia is actually going out of their way to ask for international neutral observers.

I haven't read enough about the Georgia stuff yet though, so that's just my initial reaction.

I don't know what success means in Iraq because I don't know what our goal is in Iraq.

Our first goal was to dismantle WMDs but there weren't any. We lied about enriched uranium and that didn't work.

Our next goal was to stop Al-Qaeda in Iraq but they were never there. We lied about ties to Al-Qaeda and that didn't work.

Our next goal was to liberate Iraqis but that started a civil war and made the region an orgy of terrorist recruitment.

Our next goal was to take the oil and run but they're already signing oil contracts with China and leaving us out, biting us in the ass.

I guess our next goal is to build our biggest military base there so we can always have a presence in the Middle East to keep pressure on the other wackos around there? I guess we're successfully building it?

I really don't care what we're doing over there anymore, because it's costing too much American money and too many American lives.

If we have another goal over there I don't know about, I'd love to know. How are we succeeding, and at what are we succeeding this time?

Maybe, in this situation there is no clear cut good guy and bad guy.

Maybe things in the real world aren't so black and white.

Maybe, that type of thinking is what causes a lot of the worlds problems.

I would cite regulation, but I know you will simply ignore it.
