There are few certainties in life, but this is one of them: if you give gamers the opportunity to create their own content in a game, they will make penises. Since Spore is centered around the concept of user-generated content, this could potentially be a huge problem for the game. However, designer Will Wright sounds more impressed than worried.
"When you give players creative control, you have to expect they're going to do the unexpected," Wright told the Associated Press. "Some of it's really good for what they were shooting for. It's amazingly explicit, especially when those creations are animated. We just have to make sure those people aren't messing up the experience for others."
Wright also discussed the idea of porting the game to other platforms, explaining that each game would have to be tuned to the strengths of each system. "Spore on almost any platform is going to be different and tied to the unique aspects of that platform," he said. "Sitting in front of a console is very different from sitting in front of a PC. Whether you're using a mouse or a PS3 controller or a Wii wand, that, right off the bat, is arguing for a somewhat different design."
The Spore Creature Creator has already given us a brief glimpse of what to expect when the game is finally released, while the recently released Spore Origins on iPod has shown how the game can be tuned for a specific platform. Personally, I think I'm ready to play the whole game already, enough of this bits and pieces strategy. At least the wait isn't too long, as Spore is set to hit PCs and Macs on September 7.
