Again, every game since the begining of time is a survival game. No game encourages dying. So a "survival" premise doesn't mean the game is a survival horror game at all. Is Umbrella Chronicles a survival horror game? It has the same premise...

And while resident evil 4 has a survival horror premise and setup, the execution is not survival horror.

Imagine a horror movie setup...teenagers in the woods, surrounded by small japanese girls that come out of TV's, zombies and all kinds of other creatures.  The only problem is tha those teenagers are packing Uzi's grenades and snipers and are blasting away through these creatures until the very end...

Would this be a horror movie?

Dude, that does sound like a horror movie to me.

Aliens is considered horror (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0090605/) and it certain has advanced weapons and tons of ammo.  AND they blast their way through EVERYTHING.

 Lol...nice example.

Aliens is listed as Action, Thriller, Horror, Sci fi on IMDB. I guess people had the same arguments about it as we do about resident evil 4:)

I would classify Alien as Sci Fi horror where Aliens would be...wow...tough call...

Obviously in it's most general definition, survival horror could then encompass more games than people would generally accept as survival horror, me included.

We will just disagree on RE4, and it appears to be a fairly even split for the people posting here anyway. I will continue to view it as survival horror, based on the theme , setting, and story premise. And not on type of gameplay and choice of weapons and avaliability of ammo.

Well, and I think thats another little piece we see differently.  I don't see that Action is exclusive from horror.  A horror situation can definitely have tons of action in my mind.

Edit:  Though I definitely understand what it is you see as survival horror.  So, I'll be able to give you good recommendations if I find any survival horror games I think you will really like.

for sure...i know what you mean as well. And dont get me wrong...Resident Evil 5 is a day 1 purchase for me. there isn't a game I would put ahead RE5 this gen as a bigger must have.

I just haven't been trully scared of a videogame since like...umm...silent hill 4.

Even though, the new Alone in the dark had that one kinda creepy part where you had to close your eyes and look for clues in that room and that white ghost was pointing to where to look...

I'm waiting for an AAAAAA survival horror game. Anything less is for swine.

As far as Silent Hill 2 goes, I just picked it up earlier this week and popped it in for the first time tonight. So far I think the game is trash. It has that asstastic control scheme that made the original Resident Evil games so much fun. And WTF is up with save points, the manual only describes them as mysterious red things.

Needless to say I played the game for about and hour, walked around with nothing to do but stare at fog and died without finding a save point. Now if I want to play it again I have to start over and walk around for another hour all while trying to find this mysterious red thing the manual doesn't even bother to show you a good picture of.

If this is your idea of a "true" survival horror game you can fucking keep it.

Silent Hill 2 is the finest example of survival horror. If you don't like it , obviously you dont get it...hence games like GTA4, Gears of War and other instant gratification games exist to keep you happy.

This thread wasn't made to try to recrut more people to like true survival horror.

It's not that I don't get the game, I understand it and find it very creepy. Nor am I knocking the fact you only get a large piece of wood as a weapon. My cheif complaint was that the game forces you to find save points inside trash cans and other weird places. It's the stupidest save system I have ever seen in my life.  It becomes more of an issue when you've been playing the game for an hour without saving because you don't even know what to look for due to a vauge description in the manual and then you die because of some random bug crawling on the ground you could barely see and have to do an assload of walking around all over again.

Yes the game was creepy and tense but that save system is ass.

Yes RE4 its a survivor horror game but a different one it doesnt have the anticipation of encountering something that really scares you, the fear comes just from running away form the pack of zombies/ganados or runnin low on ammo there where like 4 or 5 scares in the games and the best its from the guy in the fridge and this is forma a guy already finsished like 7 times; i think if they remove the clunky controls for the America Release Fatal Frame 4 it could be a better game than it its , maybe Project Origin could be another good one but besides of that can't think of another.

Project Origin...one of my most awaited games this year (or should i sey next as its been pushed back to 2009).

That game should be a horror game for sure...I wouldn't classify it as survival horror though. I'll try Fatal Frame 4 no matter what the reviews say...

Resident Evil 5...and Resident Evil 4 was survival horror.

Doom 4 is going to be coming out and I guess that is classified as Action Survival Horror.
