RE4 is just like a zombie slayer game
I do agree RE 4 is one of the best games i've ever played, but it's hardly a survival horror, it does have some tense moments but they just took the franchise in different direction which was a good decision after 5 survival horror games.
Fatal Frame IV looks quite good and it's a must buy for me.

Yes, hence the 'Survival horror', there is no worry of dying when you get the weapons and ammo to blast away pretty much everything you face like in RE4. In survival horror you actually have to run from some encounters and not kill them, or risk death.
RE4 is an action shooter. |
Oh Geez, I'll reference this again.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Survival_horror
The mechanics, the type of gameplay, is not what defines the survival horror genre. And if you read the link, survival horror games often include adventure and action elements. On top of the fact that I think the inability to move while shooting takes a bit of the action away.
What defines survival horror is the theme. RE4 has a complete horror situation, that Leon and Ashley are trying to survive.
And the explination that it isn't survival horror because it didn't scare you specifically, is down right wrong. If that were the case, then there has not been a survival horror game released in the past ten years. It's been over a decade since a game scared the Hawk, so I guess survival horror genre has been dead for 10 years already. Are all these game really scaring you? More specifically are the horror fans really getting scared by these games?

It has that asstastic control scheme that made the original Resident Evil games so much fun. And WTF is up with save points, the manual only describes them as mysterious red things. Needless to say I played the game for about and hour, walked around with nothing to do but stare at fog and died without finding a save point. Now if I want to play it again I have to start over and walk around for another hour all while trying to find this mysterious red thing the manual doesn't even bother to show you a good picture of. If this is your idea of a "true" survival horror game you can fucking keep it. |
Silent Hill 2 is the finest example of survival horror. If you don't like it , obviously you dont get it...hence games like GTA4, Gears of War and other instant gratification games exist to keep you happy.
This thread wasn't made to try to recrut more people to like true survival horror.
@rock_on hahahahaha you killing me. tht=at is some funny comment you got . you win this thread.

Again, every game since the begining of time is a survival game. No game encourages dying. So a "survival" premise doesn't mean the game is a survival horror game at all. Is Umbrella Chronicles a survival horror game? It has the same premise...
And while resident evil 4 has a survival horror premise and setup, the execution is not survival horror.
Imagine a horror movie setup...teenagers in the woods, surrounded by small japanese girls that come out of TV's, zombies and all kinds of other creatures. The only problem is tha those teenagers are packing Uzi's grenades and snipers and are blasting away through these creatures until the very end...
Would this be a horror movie?
It might be a while, but yes. I fully plan on branching into the survival horror genre with our dev team in a few years. I've had some ideas, and the other night I had the most detailed zombie apocalypse dream EVER, and I managed to wake up and record it all down. Survival horror fans are in for a treat. That dream was effed up. =)
honestly everytime i see new Vids of Left 4 Dead it makes me drool more and more, it looks like Resident Evil on steroids, if Valve does this game right it could very well be the greatest survival horror game of all time.
That's normal when a genre becames popular.
Fatal frame 4 seems good but until I play it, I dunno.
Cursed Mountian seems cool too. I hope it doesn't dissapoints.
But maybe EA's project with Suda51 and Shinji Mikami's horror game can be that one? I hope so. It has everything for winning.
And I agree that Resident Evil 4 is not a survival horror game. The creators said that it is a "survival action" game which is different.

Dude, that does sound like a horror movie to me.
Aliens is considered horror (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0090605/) and it certain has advanced weapons and tons of ammo. AND they blast their way through EVERYTHING.
