Alan Wake and Fatal Frame 4 will probably be terrific survival horror games.

RE4 was a survival horror game, and had scary aspects to it. was it nearly as scary as RE 1, 2 or 3? or 0 for that matter? no, but its still a survival horror |
Ok lets take your argument in to consideration...and roll with it. Lets say that someone does find resident evil 4 scary after the first 30 minutes. This doesn't mean its survival horror. The only thing that stops that person from reaching the next room is lack of ammo...that is not "survival" horror. And therefore its not horror at all...as everything can be blasted away with the shotgun. The scariest moment in videogames is the one that doesn't happen...yet you think it will.
In old Resident Evil games you had to conserve bullets, run away, fight with any means neceessary. On top of that there were lots of puzzles which if not solver properly would kill you...
Unfortunately for your argument, RE4 has none of that. If someone finds the game scary, great. They are still playing a 3rd person shooter while being scared.

Such a cleverly hedged knock on the Wii I almost let it pass. I mean, shovelware...seriously?

Oh relax...if you think about it you will see where im coming from.
Obscure 2 was shovelware, you cant deny that. And here we have another tiny company that most likely is looking to make some quick $$$ on the wii and is making a survival horror game. Look at the history of what Deep Silver has done and you will have a hard time arguing they dont make shovelware. (for ps3 and 360 too)

This is one of those things that is very subjective. Survival Horror does not have a definitive definition that I can find. But I agree with the wikipedia entry, that mechanics do not determine the genre. So, even if it were a 3rd person shooter, that would not exclude it from being survival horror.
And on top of that, RE4 does have more ammo than most other survival horror games, but it is still limited. You can't unload your ammo at will. You do have to use it somewhat wisely.

RE4 is not really a survival horror
It is just another shooter ... (except maybe when u face the degenerators ...)
@disolitude
About which Alone in the Dark are you talking ???
The last one (5) ? or the first years ago ?
Time to Work !

About RE4 and the ammo situation. I think most people who played all RE before it found they had plenty of ammo to go through the game. That's because we've been conditionned by previous games to use ammo very carefully.
A friend of mine borrowed my copy of RE4, he had never played a RE before. He got to the point where you have to choose between two paths (many Ganados and the Chainsaw sitters or the Cave Troll from LOTR), he had two shotgun shots left. He never got past this point.
So it's possible to run of ammo in RE4, just less likely if you're an experienced gamer.

Shooter? In how many shooters are you unable to move while shooting?

I've played 3 of them...original, the new beginning in 2001 and the new one. I was reffering to the new one above.

However these days they seem to be budget titles such as Obscure 2 or a failed attempt at a good game such as Alone in the Dark. Sure some games have come close to AAA status his gen (Condemned 1/2, Siren) but the industry used to have couple of survival horror games every year that were must play titles. Games like Silent Hill 1 and 2(amazing), Eternal Darkness, Resident Evil 1,2,3,Code veronica, Remake, Clock Tower... So what could be a possible AAA entry in to this genre this gen? (If any) Silent Hill 5? Fatal Frame 4? Roumored Eternal Darkness sequel? Dead Space? A new IP? PS. Resident Evil 4 wasn't survival horror so I doubt 5 will be... |
This, I dont see there being much if any AAA survival horror games cuz IMO, RE was at the top of survival horrors and now that they went all 3rd person action-y, I don't see no other franchise filling that void. Unless Capcom decides to make another Dino Crisis
