You have decent sources? He's been saying that for a week now at every major news site, so I don't think is much of a halogamer1989 exclusive story.

You must be an Obama supporter if you want McCain to select Romney. He will select a governor, but it will not be Romney. I think the two picks with the most upside, also the two most likely, are either Crist (Gov-FL) or Sanford (Gov-SC). Do not count out Pawlenty (Gov-MN) or even Palin (Gov-AK). 

Jackson: While Romney and McCain have their disagreements, I believe that he would give an advantage to your state of Michigan for the Romney name, Midwestern states that are Pro-GOP but are being farmed by Obama-$$$, youth and fundraising ability and the most important--His economic credentials.

As you mentioned, Romney does have a substantial fundraising apparatus. Romney could also make Michigan interesting, but his economic credentials would be a negative in the state.  A majority of the prospective voters have shown that they agree with Obama on the economy. Not that Romney's economic views will harm McCain in Michigan any more than McCains' own economic views, but they cannot help.

Even if Romney made Michigan competitive, I am of the opinion that his negatives will mitigate those two positives. Contrary to what you said, Romney is not particularly popular in the Midwest (sans Michigan). He is even more unpopular in the South. He also performed poorly with Latino voters in the primaries; this could be a deciding factore in states such as NV and NM. He is also fairly unpopular with evangelical voters, and some prominent evangelical leaders have publicly warned McCain about selecting Romney as his VP. 

Whilst the nominee for VP is usually insignificant in regards to a voter's choice, polls have shown that an unusually high number of voters say the VP nominee will be a deciding factor in whom they vote for.

The official, who has ties to the McCain campaign and spoke on condition of anonymity, said it was unclear who McCain had selected. The choice is a closely guarded secret among McCain's top campaign lieutenants.
