Forums - Sony - PS3 plays some AVI files, not others??

It is most likely the codec. There are always some files that do not play. If they play on your PC you might try to reconvert them but thats a very time consuming business.

Another problem with encoding is that. The video could play fine in playback mode but re-encoding would just return an error.

Ugh this is such a bitch... VLC is open source right? Can't Sony just ask to pop their player in the ps3? Solves so many problems...

@chenguo4: Putting VLC onto the PS3 is not an option, Sony would have their ass sued from here to the moon. The video and audio codec field is filled to the brim with patents, patent trolls and patent fee agencies. Which is why Sony has been rolling out their codec support one by one, as their legal department goes over all possibilities and makes sure all needed license agreements are in place.

My personal frustration is that there seems to be no combination on the PS3 atm which allows me to combine h264 video with ac3 audio (perfect for putting copies of my dvd's on it). Have seen some reports that putting those two codecs in a MPEG TS container format works, but I haven't been able to create such files yet.

that pised me off bad that did man. but when they did the other firmware cor remember which one they increased support now alot more o fthem work, i think one more firmware should do it

So VLC has all those licensing deals in place? An open source non profit organization managed those deals while Sony cant?

I think I'm missing something, please explain? Does VLC not need licenses b/c its freeware? Or what???

vlc needs a lot less thats for certain. Most of the stuff is free for use as long as you dont profit. VLC doesn't but you can't claim that sony doesn't cause the ps3 equipped with it costs money.

Check out my game about moles ^

Yeah, when you start making money off open source, you're heading directly to court.

It's like me putting a basket full of sour oranges and leave a "free" sign. You walk by and decided to put a sign up, "5 cents each". You just can't sell something like that... oh wait, you could... nvm... bad example... bad oranges...

I wish there was some kind of "download the codec you want" stuff on playstation 3, but seeing as though it is all part of the firmware, it's prob not going to happen.

I was bummed when I download the Rage HD trailer from QuakeCon (wmv) and it plays, but with no sound. :(

I convert all video files using winavi converter, I haven't  had any problems yet, just choose to convert to wmv and the software does the rest
