I just bought a cheap ass 34 inch HDTV. Little did I know, this particular TV does not support 720p. This isn't a huge deal since most HD television and Blu-Ray movies will play in 1080i. However, the PS3 games that run 720p max native resolution all get scaled DOWN to 480p. This sucks pretty bad.

I'm a little annoyed at Sony for not adressing this issue, as XBOX 360 will automatically upscale all content from 720p to 1080i.

Does anyone here know of any way to force the PS3 to upscale? I've heard of upscaling boxes, but the only ones I can find upscale 480 to 720 or 1080, not 720 to 1080.

i think since 1.5 the ps3 downscale and upscales games and movies.

Yes, the PS3 will upscale PS2 and PSONE games to 1080i, and DVD to 1080i, however PS3 games that are in 720p get downscaled to 480p.

Yes, I have an older HDTV. I have a rear-projection, 65-inch Mitsubishi and I am not inclined to get rid of it. I plan on upgrading at some point, but I have some sort of inexplicable, sentimental attachment to it.

No, you can't force your PS3 to display games that do not have a 1080i/p setting programmed to display in 1080i/p. Luckily fewer and fewer games will be locked in 720p. At least the games that are can now be played in widescreen which you never had before.

It's not a HUGE HUGE deal, but it is pretty annoying that Sony hasn't patched this up yet.

LBP in 480 here we come!

A lot of games say they are 720p, but when you put them in your system that is 1080 only, they play in 1080. Look at Soul Caliber 4, the box says 480p, 720p, yet it can play in 1080i too.
I have faith, especially that LBP and newer Sony games will work. EDIT: in your Display settings, 720p is unchecked, right?

I have a Sony 36" CRT HDTV. It's old, but it does 1080i. I still think CRT is the best, so I'm not getting a new one till something as good as CRT comes out.
