Forums - Sony - Is it safe to go on the internet with the PS3?

I think the PS3 being its own unique architecture makes you fairly safe.

wow, imagine a bot-net powered by PS3's. if Folding at Home is being hugely assisted by PS3s, a bot-net would be just plain scary.
Luckily though it'd be damn difficult if not impossible to get working.

Proud Sony Rear Admiral

as long as u stay away from porn ull be safe

"The features within them are not of those which get viruses on PCs. People spend time putting viruses on (mostly Microsoft) operating systems."

How about MS 360??

I think it's pretty safe, unless you watch a lot of porn.

Yeah Ps3 is safe to browse the internet.

there currently are no viruses that work on the PS3, so you are safe

Viruses are usually built for Microsoft Windows, there are a few for cellphones and for some other computer OSs but they don't come close in quality and amount to the Windows ones... Now, consoles like the Wii or the PS3 and handhelds like the DS and PSP have hacks but not a single real virus...

Now the 360 is considered a special case because is made by M$, but the truth is that currently the 360 has no virus because, like the PS3 and the Wii, they have their own architecture and OSs (that are not Windows), so the viruses have to be custom made for the console, then there's the Network case, everything that works with the console's OSs is official and signed. The hacks and homebrews can change this but when you hack a console you're on your own, and to do it you have to know what you're doing.

In conclusion, you don't have nothing to worry about for now and the near future...

*whack heads against wall* at least this forum aren't filled with dolts :)

Every one is right. Your X Console is safe. There are Intrusion and Trojans.

Intrusions try to get to your system by open comm ports that have software that listen and respond to commands over the port. Commands typicly that use various OS functions to continue infection and damage. Console typiclly don't have open ports. As more advances our console OS get though we could start seeing this type of virus show up. Firewall protection here.

Trojans. Require you to download to your system and then require that the virus be executed. Clever viruses can his in images. As previously stated code on the PS3 needs to be signed. Failure means no execution. Anti virus protection here.

Squilliam: On Vgcharts its a commonly accepted practice to twist the bounds of plausibility in order to support your argument or agenda so I think its pretty cool that this gives me the precedent to say whatever I damn well please.

Well, the 360 does not have a browser. It can however run unsigned code, so going online is somewhat riskier. I would not worry too much about it though.
