Forums - Sony - Hideo Kojima: Regretful of MGS4 cutscenes

perpride said:

The cut scenes were a fucking blessing. I have not heard a single person who actually owns this game complain about it. They are damn fun to watch. I mean, you can skip through them if you don't like it...so it is not as if Kojima is forcing you to watch. The only time I have ever heard of this "problem" is when talking to people that: 1. Hate all MGS games 2. Don't own a PS3 and are bitter.

Who complains about skipable cut-scenes?

Mr. Kojima: MGS4 was flawless...don't regret anything.

MGS4 is awesome but calling it flawless shows fanboyism(no offense) since the game actually isn't

The only reason people complain about cutscenes is because Half Life and BioShock spoiled them

Well, here's your first. The cutscenes were long, trite, and repetitive.

Some of us don't like long cutscenes, even if they are skippable. We would like to know WTF is going on in the game.

One of the chief reasons MGS is so unique is the lengthy cutscenes. It's very much a story driven franhcise and the cutscenes are there to advance the plot at key intervals. They may be long, and sometimes boring, but they're definitely needed to really create the sense of depth and plot the series holds.

There is no other game like it.

I do however like the way a lot of the cutscenes in MGS4 were interactive, it shows how Kojima is trying to evolve the gameplay and storytelling of the series while still remaining true to it's roots.

You must have missed the FMV "all video with a little gameplay tossed in" phase of the industry.

No offense taken. Have you played through MGS4? Cause that is pretty much the only game I've ever played that I would call flawless.

I still need to finish it but I doubt I would call it flawless.  Even the best games ever made weren't flawless

i think this is more inline what he is considering to do in his next big game. i believe he may try a new approach then the long fixed cutscenes, instead interactive ones.

The majority of the cutscenes were fine but....

SWEET JESUS the end went on and on.

The part where Big Boss appears and dies in the most protracted and hilarious death scene ever was just numbing.

And the ending of Act 3 was would have been so much better if it was playable. Act 3 was the worst act, and it needed something at the end to make up for the endless tailing section. It was as if Kojima was taunting us....'heres the most action packed part of the game....and you cant play it! OWNED!'

I hope my 360 doesn't RRoD

Interesting tidbit from the original interview:

But the thing that I am trying to work out right now is an idea that I had ten years ago, which I am still worried on the technical side whether it's possible or not even today.

As far as cinematic cutscenes, Kojima reached the pinnacle with MGS4.
Now if Kojima would like to try something new, i say bring it on, but as he puts it himself, it might be more interactive but less dramatic. He might just come to the conclusion the cutscenes are still the way to go, especially for his kind of complex plots with elaborated contexts that involve a large number of main characters and over the top action sequences.
