Good rule of thumb.

Watch anything by Gainax, Bones, and Gonzo and avoid with the fear of god anything produced by sunrise.

I'm sorry but that is generalising and ignorant. It's attitudes and comments like that which end up sucking almost every ounce of fun out of watching and discussing anything to do with them, regardless of good or bad. I'm going to be honest and say that Sunrise is my favorite animation studio based on what they have made that i like. Out of my top 5 anime of all time Sunrise has made 4 of them. By Comparison i haven't liked ANYTHING Gainax has made outside of Gunbuster and Gonzo has made Fullmetal Panic and Dragonaut which are two of the worst anime i've seen in my life, but i don't hold it against them. Anime studios are not some kind of brain in a jar which dictates the outcome of everyone and everything within it's duristiction, they are all made up out of people. Yes, Gundam Seed Destiny was crap to say the least, but it didn't make me cautious of Sunrise...it just made me learn to avoid any thing directed by Mitsuo Fukuda.

Sorry if I offended you, but i find Studio's to be very important. I mention the ones I do because they have overwhelming quality. They are all well known for superb animation, narrative, and style. This doesn't mean they never mistep, but thats the exception.

Sunrise used to be like that, but modern Sunrise is not the same studio of Mobile Suit Gundam/Escaflowne/Cowboy Bepop fame. They are terrible animators now. They slide and reanimate way to often. In fact I believe Gundam Wing was stretched to 52 episodes using a mere 30 minutes of footage.

I'm not saying that Sunrise hasn't made some catastrophic cock-ups in the past, it certainly has, but then Gainax certainly has, BONES certainly has, Gonzo MOST CERTAINLY has. Gundam Wing was a poor series, it seemed like 95% of its battle scenes were made up of stock footage and what wasn't was totally unacceptable. Coupled with flat characters and a boring and redundant story makes it one of the lowest points in the franchises history. Then only a year later comes Escaflowne, which excels at superb characterization and fantastic visuals with mecha that were just so nice to look at made it one of the best anime of the 90's.

By comparisson, Gainax has a much more notorious record of cutting corners when it comes to animation giving birth to the 'Gainax Ending' which it a well known phrase among anime viewers as series which goes overbuget and then throws together a rather shallow ending and tries to pass it of as artistic in a vain attempt to hide the fact they ran out of money. Obviously Evangelions ending(s) being the prime example.

I would have sympathised with you somewhat following the end of Destiny. Now there was a prime example of how NOT to do an anime and i honestly wish Fukuda was not at the helm of the GS movie should that ever come out. So when Gundam 00 was announced i remember watching it with a 'at least it won't be as bad as GSD' mentality. Come 25 episodes later i feel dirty for even mentioning it in the same sentence as that pile of crap. Gundam 00's first half was nothing short of fantastic and has rejuvenated my faith in Gundam and Sunrise. Thr characterization was exellent and the story was intriguing. The animation was technically and artistically gorgeous set to some of the best choreographed fight scenes i've ever seen in a mecha anime. Throughout the first half i only counted five reused cells. Yes i can count all instances of stock footage on one hand.

In short it's a terrible thing to generalize an animation studio based on a handfull of titles and you rather contradict yourself by saying 'avoid with the fear of god anything produced by sunrise' yet then go and say escaflowne and Cowboy Bebop are good titles. Your rather derogatory post comes off less as a statment of opinion and more of a hate speech. And you know as well as i do that if i posted 'Watch anything by Sunrise, Bones but avoid with the fear of god anything produced by Gainax or Gonzo' you'd be telling me the same thing.

Black cat

I totally second the nomination of Black Cat. It is one of the best visuallay spectacular animes ever. Also, It's very short, but not too short. Only 24 Episodes. It's fantastic. Also, Rurouni Kenshin is really cool, but the anime was never finished... so you'll have to read the manga for the real ending...

ok Zoids Chaotic Century, Zoids Guardian Force, Zoids Zero, Zoids Genesis

i left out zoids fuzors cuz it looks like a 3d animation which sux.
