Forums - Sony - New PS3 may already be using 65/65 chipset

The older 80GB PS3 had a hardware PS2 GS in it, as well as additional memory card and USB ports, which might explain some of the additional power consumption over the recent 40GB model.

The 60GB PS3 had a hardware PS2 EE and GS, and of course used 90nm CPU and GPU chips. How much power did it consume?

Given the new 65/65 X360's supposed consumption of just over 100W, I would not at all be surprised if this new PS3 was also 65/65, and probably saving Sony a good chunk of money.

Haha, its kinda funny I forgot all about the GS. But with the 360 consuming a little over 100W with its 65/65 chips, I think its believeable that the PS3 is using the 65/65 chips as well.

Kinda makes you wonder what would have happened if Microsoft was on its game last year. If they had released a $199 360 last year they could have stopped all this Sony momentum that it gained being at such a close price point.

me and welan pretty much sumed it all up already...

I was waiting for the at least the 65/65 chipset to upgrade to a new system since I've got one of the release PS3s that won't play GTAIV. Since the 45/65 looks like it's around the corner then I can wait for that, I wish I could get confirmation somewhere on this. Wouldn't Sony want to announce this? less power consumption, lower heat generation, and higher reliability all seem like selling points to me

the CELL should be at 45nm now... Toshiba should have had it in production since early this month.
