They're monitoring and bringing some PS2 game BC via firmware...

Eh...it's better than nothing but why not bring full BC? It's not expensive at all.

Soriku it costs 35 dollars to put the emotion engine inside of a system.  Thats alot of money.  Yes to you it may not be expensive, but this is the right route.  The rumor is,  the goal is to have all the major hits, and major RPGs.  So that means Tales, Metal Gear, Final Fantasy, GTA, Shadow :D.

Also now you can start hunting down that super cheap 40 gb PS3 that will be under 299 on the used market since the 80s deflate it.

You don't need an emotion engine to play PS2 games software is fine and cost nothing.

They can probably do a universal backwards compatibility with about 60-70% and than work their way up from there. It can be done guys.

Console Agnostic since 2001.

ZOMG Groundbreaking feature! THIS IS LIVING! jk
Good for them, the only gripe I have is why it took so long. Hopefully they will work on the top titles and leave the other average games. Surely there is no need to add Buzz or SingStar as not having that functionality will lead to the newer versions being purchased?
I'm hoping for:
FFX, FFXII, MGS2, MGS3, GTA's and Tekken.

Consoles Owned: XBOX 360, Wii, DS and PSP.

Actually i think they mentioned this only to import songs from singstar ps2 to ps3. Of course i have a 60 GB so i dont care at all hahahahahhahahahahahaha $600 FTW!

The BC issue really is overblown, but there is clearly a demand for it. I wouldn't venture to say it's a key selling point of the PS3, but plenty of those who paid for it, use it.

I appreciate the feature and use it fairly regularly, but I'm also willing to let it go for a cheaper, smaller hardware unit that has a friendlier, much lower power consumption profile.

Why blown out of proportion? It's a pretty shakey argument if someone claims to want to purchase a $399 console to play the same games that can be played on a $129 console.

Most normal, sensible people, presumably buy a PS3 to... play PS3 games. Amazing concept.

Hypothetical retail store conversation should be something like...
Clerk: "Do you know... that you CAN'T play PS2 games on this PS3 console?!"
Customer: "But it does play PS3 games, right?"
Clerk: "Well, yes, but earlier PS3s used to play PS2 games as well."
Customer: "That's nice, but I'm really only interested in PS3 games. That's why I'm buying a PS3."
Clerk: "But have you seen how large the PS2 library is?!"
Customer: "Looks that way, but aren't those consoles only $129?"

Often, it's a case of a thrifty consumer wanting everything and wanting it as cheap as possible. Nothing wrong with that, but it's not always realistic. While shopping for consoles isn't like shopping for cars, you can see how far that line of thinking would go in that instance.

Software BC is eventually a matter of time, but it will be delayed as long as the PS2 remains in production. The main hurdle is that games must be made soft compatible on an individual basis.

The only way I see that happening in force is if Sony starts selling PS2 games on the PSN. Then... there is a strong case for them to move ahead with PS2 soft BC. Given their current push for the PSN, it doesn't seem beyond the realm of the possible.

No, it's not. It's critical and I'm glad Sony appears to be addressing it.

edit: i'm hearing rumors it's just singstar ps3 picking up song data from the singstar ps2 disc... LAME.

Current-gen game collection uploaded on the profile, full of win and good games; also most of my PC games. Lucasfilm Games/LucasArts 1982-2008 (Requiescat In Pace).

It's not overblown to you, a gamer who doesn't fall into the typical mass consumer demographic.

The average consumer really doesn't care, and as the user base continues to expand from the core audience, it will only mean more users won't care.

The future of PS2 BC will most likely lie in Sony's ability to market and sell PS2 titles through the PSN. By then, it will be an issue of individually writing patches for each game sold this way. It also guarantees a return on investment for each game given this individual treatment. It's really just a matter of time.

wow! how many different PS3's are out there?

welp i can bet that sony took its time with this because they are aiming for an 80-90% BC out of the gate. we all knew it was coming, and now thats its basically confirmed i expect a statement sometime in october/november about it coming in an ps3 update.

edit: i am curious to see how they do this though. is the update optional for us 60gb owners? for that it would need to be its own update seperated from any other system update.

The link is broken.

Good news if true though. Unfortunately I buy a lot of niche titles, so i'll be shopping eBay for a used 60GB when I'm ready to buy a PS3. I don't trust niche titles getting much attention, same as with Microsoft's BC.
