I'm 100% sure Gears 2 will be better, but many big sequels don't do as well as the original because of similar situations.
God of War2, Metal Gear Solid 3
Then there are one's where there is an increase Halo 2 and GTA Vice City/SA. But Halo 2 added online (a very big jump) and GTA doesn't have a connecting story.

I agree with your logic but think GOW2 is much more polished to be honest GOW went out with a a ot of decent ideas but notfully baked. Even cliff in an interview was shocked how much it was played online it was added but not fully fleshed out. I think this one is going to be HUGE. Everyone of my firends (25+) is getting it the last time this happened was Halo 3 which sold 8 million. Which personally was a HUGE disapointment in my eyes. But Halo 2 was the pinnacle as I feel GOW2. They had more time for the story and had all the multiplayer experience to fully flesh that out

The games that should be played the most often aren't the ones that are played the most. The phenomanal success of Gears1 is what's going to beat Gears2. On top of the logical stuff in my above posts, I also want to remind you that Gears has some of the best legs on 360. Gears2 will have a huge holiday, 3-4 million but Gears1 being a budget title this holiday plus all those 199-299 360's that are going to fly off of shelves (mass market and value gamers) means it will see a boost in the holidays.
This really isn't a knock at Gears 2. When I said "...I will not be buying Gears 2." it not about the quality of Gears 2, it's about all the competition the new title will be facing. There are a bunch of other games I want before it.
When Gears 1 came out there were no other proven franchises on 360 selling in the multimillions yet (except Oblivion & COD2-3). There was Saints Row (1.5 mil), Dead Rising, Rainbow Six, etc. Great games, that still sell well, also.
Now add to that the 2007-2008 releases, Halo 3, GTAIV, Fable 2, all the JRPGs, all the other decent niche shooters, Mass Effect, the list goes on and on for the great games of 07-08... many of which will also be budget titles which will attract the new 199 value buyers.
If it makes you feel better, I think it will out sell every PS3 holiday release (that I can think of) except maybe Little Big Planet (which I can honestly say that I have no idea how well that is going to sell).
