Forums - General - Question for techies.

I just recently got a crazy good deal on an HDTV. I got it home and hooked it up, and the only resolutions that it supports are 480p and 1080i. This isn't a huge deal for gaming since alot of HD games will run in 1080i, and what doesn't run in 1080i will run in 480p, which still looks pretty good. ?However, I called my cable company, and the Hd channels that they offer are mostly in 720p. My question is, the HD channels that are in 720p, won't they upscale to 1080i or run in 480p?

That's kind of what I thought.

So if my TV only has 480p and 1080i, I should, in theory, still get the 720p Hd channels, correct?

You should. My TV is similar in that I don't have 720p. Mine upscales that resolution to 1080i.

I give this thread a 9.7.

Thank god for the disable signatures option.

If the TV is capable of upscaling it, then you are fine (which if it says only 480p/1080i, I'm assuming it has some form of scalar as most non-digital tv is 480i). However, if it is not, you'll have to confirm the box from the cable company upscales to 1080i. I know most boxes do, but there is a chance it doesn't.

If it doesn't, you can always get an upscaler from a site such as monoprice for fairly cheap.

If you drop a PS3 right on top of a Wii, it would definitely defeat it. Not so sure about the Xbox360. - mancandy

Technically you are kind of downscaling the image to 1080i since it is actually a worse resolution, but most electronic devices and TV's believe otherwise, including the PS3 and 360.

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.  The only thing that really worried me was the ether.  There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke

It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...."  Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S.
