I really dont like Seagate due to their copyright practices.

Just go with WD, they are truly the best brand available.

I put all of my save game data onto my ipod, simply pressed copy in the ps3 menus on each piece of save data, and it went onto the ipod. Then you can just copy it back to the PS3 later.

Any storage device (usb hard drive) that is FAT32 will work to transfer files

I have a 500gig 2.5" Samsung that I just put into my PS3 today.

Seagate doesn't currently manufacture any 500GB SATA 2.5" drives.

If you bought this, then it is really the wrong size.. too big. BUT if you look on youtube: I know people have put 3.5" hard drives into PS3's.

I wouldn't risk it. But you could try.
