Forums - Sony - PS3 on the rise. Doomsayers eat crow.

"Rave reviews for exclusive games don't affect console sales. GameCube has several of the highest rated video games of all time, and it was smoked by the uber-casual PS2."

Yes, and the reason why? The Gamecube may have had 127 games that received 8.0 - 10.0 scores according to Metacritic; however, the PS2 had 318 games with review scores in the 8.0-10.0 range.

Now let's see the Wii do that. It has a long way to go considering that Nintendo isn't releasing one good game for the holiday season because they've already released all they have (Zelda, Mario, and Metroid until the next ones come out in 2010), and thus far (after being on the market a year and a half a time at which the PS2 had well over one hundred games in the 8.0-10.0 range) it only has 28.

Ps. I have no idea why you Wii fans are so excited about Fatal Frame 4. The best one of the PS2, Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly, was only the PS2's 271st best game.

My most anticipated games:  Whatever Hideo Kojima is going to do next, Final Fantasy XIII, Final Fantasy Versus XIII, Gran Turismo 5, Alan Wake, Wii Sports Resort.  Cave Story Wiiware.

And since when does the 1st 18 months of a Console decide its future entire games library ??????

The typical 'good' third party game takes 12 to 24 months to develop when dealing with Wii sized projects, and 18 to 36 months when dealing with PS3/XBox 360 sized projects. The performance through 18 months will determine how publishers allocate their resources for a particular console which will impact all games released in the 3rd year and beyond for the console. Poor sales performance early on will impact the quantity and quality of games in the later life of a console.

PS1?

The PS1 wasn't necessaraly competing with anyother viable competitors when it launched though, just the Sega Saturn which was $100 more expensive and the Atari Jaguar which was a joke of a competitor, 3D gaming at that time was considered far more lucrative than the proven mainstays of 2D gaming still on the market at that time. By the time the N64 launched two years later, the PS1 had already established a fairly comprable following and a year later in 1997, had cemented itself as the industry leader.

Remember, when the PS1 launched, the 3D gaming market was a place of uncertainty and was a market that had seen more industry new commers (Bandai, Fujutsu, Apple, 3DO and the return of Atari, Casio, Panasonic) than any generation since the early second generation. The PS1 was not only more affordable than the disc format competition, but the one console that was cheaper than it (N64) featured dated and expensive cartridges. The ridiculously cheap game disc format combined with brand new industry changing game titles was everything a fledgling console needed to get a foothold in the market.

However, the PS3 is not a fledgling console, its the successor to the most successful home console of all video game history, its slow start is not due to a lacking benefit of the doubt but rather one of the sharpest falls from grace of any console dynasty to date. It's the most expensive console on the market. Rather than featuring playability of pre-existing popular and utilitarian formats such as CD and DVD as its predicessors did, the PS3 tried to feature a new and unproven propriotary luxury format, Blu-Ray, which attributed to its expense at launch. And al the exclusives the PS3 is trying to rely on are either timid first party games or sequels to aging franchises long since past their prime. The PS1 built a dynasty with games like Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, Resident Evil, Tomb Raider, Final Fantasy (as a mass appeal franchise) and Metal Gear Solid... The PS3 now is simply trying to subside on the sequels of these franchises that have become familar and predictable, no more industry suprises, no more game genre innovation, no more fresh faces.

You are kidding right ?

Assassin Creed, Resistance, Uncharted, Motorstorm say hello.( soon LBP)

PS3 has had more new successfull new IPs than the Wii so far.....

You have to define both "successful" and "new IP"

Wii Sports, Wii Play, Wii Fit, Carnivale Games, Game Party, and Red Steel are Million selling games that were not based on any existing IP; at the same time Mario and Sonic at the Olympics, Sonic and the Secret Rings, Rayman Raving Rabbids, Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles, and MySims are all entirely new game series based on existing IPs.

I'll never understand the HDMI thing. As an OEM it can't cost Sony more than 50 cents or so to throw an HDMI cable in the box.

"How can you claim that a company that has produced games like Super Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime 3 and Super Smash Bros. Brawl has "totally forgotten how to make good games"?"

I guess I need to clarifty what I meant by that. Nintendo has totally forgotten how to make original IPs. They've been getting by on Mario, Zelda, and Metroid since the 1980's and SSB since the nineties (but it makes use of the same characters they've been using to sell their games since the eighties.) Same games for people that love to buy the same things over and over. Now, I guess you'll bring up Wii Sports (Metacritic score of 76 only sold so well because it was bundled with the Wii), and Wii Fit (Metacritic score of 80 partly its sales in America can be attributed to Ellen Degeneris' endorsement of the game).

Some other scores for games that could be considered new IP's for Nintendo. Excite Truck their attempt at a new "core" ip -- Metacritic score = 72. I'm not looking for Wii Music, Disaster: Day of Crisis, or Animal Crossing Wii to do much better.

HDMI is such a racket.  The brick and mortar retail stores absolutely GOUGE you on HDMI cables for $25 apiece on up to $125 apiece, but you can go on NewEgg.com and get one for around $10.  Everyone I know, including myself, did not get an HDMI cable or HDCP cables with their HDTVs.  It doesn't come with the PS3.  The 360 comes with HDCP, but I would have rather had the HDMI hookup.

HDMI is great and everything, but not THAT great.  It does clean up the back of your entertainment center quite a bit, but everywhere you turn people are trying to screw you over on the cables.  I went with the prepacked HDCP for my 360 and the cheap-o NewEgg cable for my TV.  Screw Monster cable.

Holy shit Paul Warren gets cranky when he climbs out from under the bridge.

You think people care about Metacritic's score for Wii Sports? Wii Sports doesn't come with the Wii. You buy Wii Sports, and it comes with a Wii for free. The game sells the system. Look at the attach rate in Japan; it's higher than even Wii Play, which comes with a free controller.

You can go by review scores all you want, but that just puts you in the camp that thinks the best game of all time was GTA4 (for a few weeks), and that Chrono Cross is better than Chrono Trigger, and every other ass-backwards things review scores would have you believe. Luckily the vast majority of gamers don't look at Metacritic at all.

Do you honestly believe that Ocarina of Time is the greatest game ever made? Better than Tetris or Street Fighter 2 or Super Mario Bros. 3 or Mario 64 or Doom 2? EVERYTHING?

Or are you arguing that the PS2 won because it flooded the market with cheap crap? 'Cuz the Wii can play at that game too, and it's winning. It's actually a small price you pay for expanding the market and having a casual-centric strategy, which both consoles did.

Go up to ten kids and ask them, "Would you pay $250.00 for Wii Sports?" I bet you get ten negative answers.

No, but MGS 4 is the best graphic novel since Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns was released in 1986.

No, the PS2 flooded the market with great games. 528 total games with Metacritic scores between 7.5 and 10.0. The Wii floods the market with cheap crap but very few great games only 46 games with Metacritic scores between 7.5 and 10.0 and 202 more games with subpar scores and that will be the Wii's undoing with nothing promising scheduled to come out from now until Mad World releases in the Spring of '09.

The difference between the PS2 and the Wii is the PS2 had 80% of the hyped titles.
If you had a PS2 and a game was getting some good hype, chance is you would be able to play it...

Only big titles PS2 owners didn't get was Nintendo first party titles and Halo...

Right now ( it may change) there obviously are more than a few good titles the Wii isn't getting or we wouldn't be seeing those threads asking for a Wii port of a HD console game pop every so often...

Right now the Wii game library is the GC library + all the shovelware the PS2 was getting...

PS3-Xbox360 gap : 1.5 millions and going up in PS3 favor !

PS3-Wii gap : 20 millions and going down !

Doomsayers at one point in time had predicted the PS3 was in dire straits due to its slow start. How things have turned around and the PS3 will be pushing towards second place by the end of the console generation.
