Forums - Gaming - David Jaffe wants dev names on box covers, says Miyamoto isn’t as big as Spielberg because of it

Here's something else from the same post on his blog that mtv decided wasn't worth the space.

Now I am not saying my name should NOT have been on the box. It should have. But so should perhaps 5 other folks from Singletrac who did key design and/or creation work and really birthed that franchise. And that is not to take away from all the work the rest of the team did or all the work the publisher did. And hell, if we were a logical business and shared a handful of game engines across all games versus all of this 'let's make our own fucking engine so our graphics can be 2% better than our competition even tho most of the public could really give a rat's ass when you are talking about that level of a difference', then a few of those 5 would not be on the box either because they would be being given credit for having written an amazing engine that LOTS of games used, not just TWISTED METAL (and WARHAWK)....are we getting there with stuff like the success of UNREAL ENGINE? And with the success of Wii where it's been made clear that a vast number of gamers do not think graphics have to make your eyes bleed for a game to be worth buying? We'll see...

His opinion is that when a franchise is created (eg the first Twisted Metal, those few people who had the creative vision and design for the game should be acknowledged, just like in movies.

I hate it when sites do crap like this to get hits.  It usuallys makes people look bad, or at least worse than they would've originally.

uh the credits at the end of games?

i think it would be a really good idea because i had never heard of miyamato untill i came to this site

Before coming to gaming sites I never knew who made what game so I think that's a good idea. If it's not there already (i've never checked). They deserve it but they could also become alot more famous for any bad games they may make.

He's extremely pretentious. Miyamoto would never permit Nintendo to put his name on the front, he's far to humble for that. Will Wright as well. Miyamoto and Wright, unlike that pompous Jaffe are more concerned about finding the next great idea for a game than thinking of a way to give more recognition to the game creators.

@twestern - What about the 100's of people who help in movies. Its the same thing. The main person who essentially "created" the game deserves to have their name on the box.

Who said I liked having the directors name plastered all over a movie?

Also, movies and games are different.  With a movie, I care who the various actors are and I want to know who they are.  For the most part, I don't always care about whose name is on a game.

I would say the name of the team (if applicabale) is just as important when it comes to games. Certain people work really well together and always managed to deliver a top notch game. I would buy any game made by Treasure because they have always delivered for me. Sadly you normally just get the publisher's name placed all over the box and in a tiny corner if you are lucky you will find the people responsible for the game. I can't count the number of people I know wh thought Disgaea and La Pucelle Tactics were made by Atlus.

David Jaffe is nothing more than an attention whore.

So his name (or Miyamoto's) should be placed on the cover but screw the other 50-100 people that put in just as much work on the game? Their name is perfectly fine sitting in the credits.

sweet jesus man its from Jaffe's own blog.

That makes his point less valid because...?

miyamoto isnt as big as spielberg because his audience is nothing compared to that of spielberg.
