Forums - Microsoft - 360 failure rates as high as 33% says EB Games

http://www.dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=7892

Interesting bits:

After contacting several retailers from various regions in North America, the responses were unanimous: the Xbox 360 is the least reliable gaming console in recent history.

EB Games held conference calls for its Canadian stores informing them of the new policy changes and revealing alarming failure rates of the Xbox 360. “The real numbers were between 30 to 33 percent,” said former EB Games employee Matthieu G., adding that failure rate was even greater for launch consoles.

As a result of the high failure rate of the Xbox 360, EB Games corporate nearly doubled the prices of its one-year, over-the-counter warranty.

A Best Buy customer service department manager, who wished to remain unnamed, said that failure rates for the console were “between a quarter to a third” of all units sold.

Former EB Games worker Matthieu G. said that the failure rates for all other consoles were not high enough for the retailer to consider revising its policies, and guesses that that  most other console systems have a failure rate of less than one percent, including the PlayStation 3.

Yeah that sucks. I really want a 360 but I don't want to blow $400 only to have it crap out on me.

On the other hand, it's already been proven that rushing the console to market has actually worked and they are in a better situation than Sony is because they came a year later.

In the end, it looks like quality took a dive for MS to put out the product quickly and beat the PS3 which seems to be working so far.

In addition it seems most 360 owners have gladly accepted multiple failures and are returning them and getting refurbished ones back (see man with 12 broken 360s).

yea its good to know why they brought the xbox 360 out early!!!

"NVIDIA ceased production of the Xbox's GPU in August 2005, which marked the end of Xbox production and the quick release of the Xbox 360." the reason:

Microsoft and NVIDIA chip pricing dispute

In 2002, Microsoft and NVIDIA entered arbitration over a dispute on the pricing of NVIDIA's chips for the Xbox.[2] NVIDIA's filing with the SEC indicated that Microsoft was seeking a US$13 million discount on shipments for NVIDIA's fiscal year 2002. Additionally, Microsoft alleged violations of the agreement the two companies entered, sought reduced chipset pricing, and sought to ensure that NVIDIA fulfill Microsoft's chipset orders without limits on quantity. The matter was settled on February 6, 2003, and no terms of the settlement were released.[
