This happens on cod online. It'll lose sound first, then when the game is over, the system freezes up. In gta4, the game will just freeze up and i have to start to system over. Sometimes when i reboot the system and i try to make the game work, it'll give me an error. its like what Dgc said.

it didnt overheat. I keep mine in a very open cool place. I only play for 3 hours at the most. I also updated it.

u cant play online without updating it.

also does anyone know how much is it to repair a ps3? if do decide to send it in for repairs.

It might be because you updated your firmware, there's been problems with it. Call Sony and if that doesn't work get a 360 (comes with a 3year warranty).

My PS3 used to freeze from time to time when i played warhawk and MLB08 online. I think you should be okay as long as your PS3 can still read your disks or doesn't shut itself off. Keep playing and if it continues to become a problem, try backing up your data and reformatting your HDD. Repairs for your PS3 will cost around 100-150usd

My freezing issues used to often happen online, what connection are you using wifi or ethernet? I know there are some wifi issues with linksus routers.

its a 80gb version. i bought the old motorstorm pack. i bought it the day it came out. i have a netgear wifi. yeah, but i can only play one game of cod4 before it freezes up.

Overheating being the cause sounds fishy to me. I have all three of my consoles in a terrible spot and they're fine. The PS3 is probably in the worst spot, it's been on all day playing movies, and it's still quite cool where it is.
