nothing to do with the console.
Physics can be improved without increasing the number of objects. For example, some racing games run the physics at 120 frames per second, while graphics are at 60 frames per second. This requires double the physics power.
You can also use additional processing power to calculate more accurate physics (for example by increasing the number of physical elements per object).

Physics get more and more complicated and demanding not only every new generation, but from the beginning of a generation to the middle of a generation.
We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls. The only thing that really worried me was the ether. There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke
It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...." Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. Thompson
killzone 2 has some amazing physics.
i remeber gears of war also had some nice physics.
i know the ps3has a more powerful processor so i could imagine they can do more with it.
Actually physics calculation aren't that bad. Even mobile phones can handle physics. The real difficulty with physics is the collision detection or more specificly Tri-mesh collision detection. With the push for more increased models polys and more accurate detection(ie no simple square box) requires more constant checking.
Here is a 2d Java Physics engine for cell phones.

You an see it run fine. The calculations are easy. So no physics doesn't get more complicated. So more complicated the object more power you will need. Simple detection objects less power or more object.
Squilliam: On Vgcharts its a commonly accepted practice to twist the bounds of plausibility in order to support your argument or agenda so I think its pretty cool that this gives me the precedent to say whatever I damn well please.

I'm playing Gears of War right now and I don't see anything out of the ordinary in terms of physics.

Gears of War has about 10 physics objects in the entire game. They had a lot of incredible particle effects, but the physics in that game was nothing.
The ONLY physics that EVER matter, are RAGDOLL PHYSICS @_@ WE NEED MORE RAGDOLL.
Gears didn't have anything I'd consider to be amazing on the physics end :P Super Stardust HD on the other hand had a ton of effects to monitor in terms of collision detection, acceleration, all that other stuff :x
Those Ghost-bust vids look amazing :D I wasn't even considering the game before I saw those, but holy crap!
From 0 to KICKASS in .stupid seconds.
