Forums - Sony - PS3 is only 'bright spot' for Blu-ray, says report

Just as Malstrom predicted. He truly is the second coming of Christ.

Aurally examine my music!

Wear gaudy colours or avoid display. It's all the same.

Be warned, I will use walls of polysyllables and complex clauses as a defence against lucid argument.

Wand to read a creepy thread?

@MikeB: I looked at those links, and I don't see any numbers contradicting the article I posted.

Where is the data which contradicts the 16.3 million DVDs / 11 million Blu-Ray information?

Notice that the 11 million Blu-Ray discs number comes directly from blu-ray.com, I doubt they'd underrepresent Blu-Ray sales.

Sorry for the late reply as I am currently on vacation in Iran.

I couldn't find the original source for your quote. There are many more Blu-Ray discs out there than there were DVDs on the market taking equal timeframes.

Especially here in Europe the PS3 made a huge difference:

I'll post some more information when I get home in a couple of weeks.

What? I posted the links right there:

http://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=1355

http://www.movieweb.com/dvd/news/20/26720.php

Kasz216 has posted more links to the same effect in this post. Blu-Ray disc sales are growing slower than DVD sales did.

EDIT - That article you posted is not even about disc sales, it's just another article about player sales (including PS3s).

The only conclusion we can take based on all these articles put together is that many PS3 owners don't use the Blu-Ray functionality, or they use it very little.

@ NJ5

BTW Blu-Ray.com is not affiliated with the Blu-ray Disc Association. Movieweb didn't post a direct link to a proper source report neither. It's also unclear to me what they are comparing, like worldwide or regional data. It wouldn't be the first time mistakes are made and data is misrepresented (leading US media reportage have been very inaccurate in the past).

I think that's very unlikely, many PS3 games are only stored on Blu-Ray disc.

According to ABI research ~87% of PS3 owners watch Blu-Ray movies, which seems to suggest a remarkable HDTV penetration amongst current PS3 owners already (a lot of adult gamers this seems to suggest also).

HDTV penetration will grow amongst the current PS3 userbase, but as the price goes down relatively more kids may get into PS3 gaming as well.

Some details for 2007:

- Sony produced over 50 million 50 GB Blu-Ray movie discs. (about 70% of total, including 25 GB discs)

- Sony sold over 54 million Blu-Ray game discs, sold to consumers by the end of 2007.

- Better production yields, lower unit costs, higher disc production, taking equal timeframes with DVD.

2008:

- Blu-Ray video disc sell through for the first 3 months of 2008, 4 times higher than in 2007 for the US, 10 times higher for Europe compared to last year.

This data regards Sony DADC, there are many other disc production facilities located throughout Europe, the US and Asia.

I don't see anything there which contradicts the numbers I posted. The first numbers you posted include game discs, and the last ones only talk about the increase in disc sales, which makes it impossible to conclude anything about the real numbers.

@ NJ5

Well your figures regarded the United States only (at least the 11 million figure). Especially in this region there was a relatively high HD DVD penetration and market confusion, probably due to mass misinformation from the US media/fanboys and early HD DVD adopters which had a small headstart on the market and cheaper pricing.

In any case from the launch of Blu-Ray format since June 2006 through December 2007 well over 120 million Blu-Ray discs have hit the market worldwide. That's quite a lot for a newly introduced format.

@MikeB: Are we in the "unsourced claims" territory again? Where's your proof that the 11 million number is for USA only?

BTW, please stop including game discs in your figures. Stop spinning things, this thread is about movies only... I could swear you're a viral marketer. You keep changing the subject and confusing the debate.

Blu-Ray is ace but I have only one blu-ray movie (one came with console)
