Forums - Sony - Final Fantasy XII - masterpiece? (possible spoilers)

I'm sorry, but I just can't fathom why someone would think FFXII deserves anything less than a 5/10. It's like saying Square Enix fucked up with the franchise and made one of the worst games in history.

Ninjabread man is a terrible game, not FFXII.

I really enjoyed this game, but disliked the Licence system.
FFX Sphere grid walks all over the Licence system

Ugh, it's such a horrible game.

The actual gameplay isn't bad, but the problem is that it tries to be kind of like an action game and it isn't nearly as good as any decent action game out there.

As for everything else, it just fails miserably so where should I start (mind you that I haven't played this game in much more than a year).

The story-- other than being a terrible knockoff it just isn't interesting. I tried twice to get into this game and both times got about 16 hours into the game and was just bored to tears. I know you could say I didn't play it enough but if the game hasn't grabbed my attention in 16 hours it just isn't going to happen or either that's a terrible story if it takes that long to get good.

The characters-- boring. None of the characters were actually interesting and on top of that, most of them didn't even have a reason for being there. Vaahn had no reason to be there, Pinnelo was just as worthless, the pirate and bunny girl had no reason to be there, and the only ones that had reasons I just didn't care about their characters. It's like the game tried to make me not like or care about them.

Gambits-- awesome idea, poor execution. By the time you finally start getting good gambits you've just stopped caring. If they would just let me have all (or at least most) options from the beginning instead of making my character start out sucking on auto pilot and gradually getting better it would have been a great system.

License grid-- dumbest idea ever. You had absolutely no reason to make your characters different so they all wound up using the same weapons and spells. Way to make your characters even more generic.

I know I had plenty of other gripes about the game but I'm sure that's enough. Someone bother Naz, he'll write a two page long rant on why this game is terrible.

That's my main problem with every ARPG I've played so far.

They will still be made whether you like it or not because people think turn based is slow and boring.  ARPG are basically action games but with RPG elements and in a few cases, a story that is worth giving a damn about

I never said I preferred turn based to action based RPGs.   I was just commenting.  :P

Tbh, I'd love to see an ARPG with the legth, content, and story of the FF series, but with gameplay in the overworld more akin to Zelda or God of War.  It'd be the best of both worlds.

I just want more interactivity and control, without forgoing all the positives of an RPG.

I just hated all of the bosses for the second half of the game. They give you every status ailment for you entire party every couple of turns. That gets old real fast.

You can find me on facebook as Markus Van Rijn, if you friend me just mention you're from VGchartz and who you are here.

Don't worry, Square made a version of FFXII that fixed all of its problems and solved many of its shortcommings, the only problem is they never bothered to release it outside of Japan.

The one problem I do have with it is that the game can be frustrating at times since you have to know how to set up the gambits. I am trying to fully understand the system but because I can't fully understand it, I resort to grinding which can be quite boring at times. I am 23 hours in the game and I am right before Henne Mines, how far am I into the main story?

You set up the gambits in the order of importance based on the most dire of situations. Your first gambit would be to use a phoenix down if a party member dies. That means that if a member does die, that gambit will take over as priority. If no one is dead, the AI goes to gambit number 2, which should be something about healing a teammate, and or casting a spell that would eliminate status ailments. Your absolute last gambit should be your basic attack.

The gambit system is one of the most brilliant systems i've ever played in an RPG, and I hope the FF series keeps it around. My one and only gripe is the same as twestern's, they don't allow you to acquire the correct gambits from the start, limiting how well your auto pilot will work. In addition, gambits typically pop up after a magic is able to be purchased in the game, so for a few good hours, you have to manually cast it no matter what. My other gripe with it is why should they be purchased? All gambits should be available to be used, and you need to be smart enough to know what your character should be doing. Great system, lousy execution.

Overall solid game. I would recommend it.

Thanks for that tip.  I am going back to FFXII once I beat Lost Odyssey

From what I understand, Silicon Knight's are going the God of War-ish RPG route with Too Human (though not to the same scale as FF), but I'd love to someone tackle a Zelda-like RPG, also incorporating some of Ico/SotC's controls.

The game is crap. There isn`t a single aspect of the game that make it worth my troubles. The gameplay is boring and repetitive. Plot is really stupid and uninspired. Not even the graphics save this game (there are lots of pop-ups and poor textures). SE add an extra layer of shitty by artificially extending everything on the game. For example, a single hunt can take up to 3 hours. First you must get the flyer to accept the hunt at a bar, then find your client with minimal clues to his location, then go to a far away dungeon to get to the monster, then meet some arbitrary conditions for the spaw (like zoning in and out until the weather changes), then kill the damn thing in less than 5 minutes, then go back to meet your client, then you find a letter telling you he moved, then talk to 5 different NPCs in different towns and finally get a shitty reward of 2 elixirs and 5000 gil.
