One thing I really don't understand is why the gaming industry thinks consumers will not buy games between April and August. Most schools and colleges are out from June through August, it seems like an ideal time for the young male demographic to spend lots of money on games.
With the recent release of Soul Calibur IV and Madden 09 coming next week, this is the start of a four month period with just a ridiculous number of games scheduled for release. How many of these will the average gamer buy? Most people probably wouldn't even be able to rent all the games they're interested in.
Which games will:
- ride the coattails of a big game to better than expected sales?
- get lost in the hype of bigger games and bomb?
-----
- 10/07: Fracture would probably sell better with a delay. The latest in a string of gimmicky shooters (TimeShift, Haze, etc.) that have generally not been very successful, it comes out a week after the superior FarCry 2, and on the same day as Fallout 3, both NBA games, and a Rockstar game.
- The seven day period from 10/14 to 10/21 looks very brutal. I would assume higly anticipated games like the Rock Band 2 bundle, Fable 2, Saints Row 2, and the Tom Clancy game will all do very well. Mediocre games like Rock Revolution, Golden Axe, and Spider-Man will probably fizzle out quickly against the tough competition. It will be interesting to see how the middle games (fairly high quality but less well known) like Shaun White Snowboarding, Dead Space, and Ghostbusters will do.
- Will games like Left 4 Dead, Call of Duty World at War, and Mirror's Edge benefit from their proximity to the monster that is Gears of War 2?
- Will gamers have any cash left in their bank accounts by the time Prince of Persia, Huxley, and Brutal Legend are out?

We don't provide the 'easy to program for' console that they [developers] want, because 'easy to program for' means that anybody will be able to take advantage of pretty much what the hardware can do, so the question is what do you do for the rest of the nine and half years? It's a learning process. - SCEI president Kaz Hirai
It's a virus where you buy it and you play it with your friends and they're like, "Oh my God that's so cool, I'm gonna go buy it." So you stop playing it after two months, but they buy it and they stop playing it after two months but they've showed it to someone else who then go out and buy it and so on. Everyone I know bought one and nobody turns it on. - Epic Games president Mike Capps
We have a real culture of thrift. The goal that I had in bringing a lot of the packaged goods folks into Activision about 10 years ago was to take all the fun out of making video games. - Activision CEO Bobby Kotick
