I think the reason that PS3 had a slow start is the same reason it will have a long life. It's expensive future proof components. To me it's like 06-07 ps3 didn't even exist.

Dear god. Tell me you don't believe the "future-proof" crap? NO console is future proof. As console gamers we get a cheaper option with a unified platform and less maintenance but we give up the technical advantage to PC gamers.

Erm hasn't the Wii already proved that you don't need to make your console insanely powerful to be successful? I really meant to say that both the 360 and PS3 were more future proof then all the consoles of the past. The PS3 a little more so.Try and have some forsight. Xbox 720 drops in 2010 for how much? I think you underestimate how many people want a PS3 but simply cannot afford one. Simply put it is still to expensive for most consumers. But it will not always be so. Consoles start flying off shelves when they hit $199. Exception for the Wii which is $250 but still looks inexpensive sitting next to a $500 Playstation 3.

MGS4 is the first, but not the last game to show off what the PS3 can really do.

Forget about the 10-year cycle, it's just a PR gimmick. Console lifecycles are decided by customers, not companies.

Besides, even if the PS3 has a 10-year cycle, that doesn't mean the PS4 will come in 10 years. Look at how the PS2 is still selling well into PS3's lifecycle.

so you think if sony dropped support for ps2 it would still sell?

Sony is barely supporting the PS2 right now and it's still selling. They're making hardware and shipping software and that's about it. After a console has taken off, it doesn't need much support to continue, developers and customers do most of the work.

I'm fairly sure that whenever MS put out their next console. Sony will have their new console out within a year of its launch. Ideally, they don't want to let MS have any head start, so it is very possible the PS4 will launch in the same quarter as the next Xbox, meaning that the 360 will have actually been supported a year longer than the PS3, because while the PS2 is a great console, it started towards the inevitable end, the day the PS3 was announced.

I have no problem with supporting old consoles. I do have a problem with touting that support as if it's an industry changing event.

If you support your console for 5 years, and it lives on for another 3, after you've put out something better, that's not a 10 year life-cycle, imo. I view lifecycle as how long a company exclusively focuses on you before they announce your replacement. If Sony could pull a true 10 year lifecycle, and skip next gen, then "10 year life cycle" would cease to be a talking point or a marketing gimmick, and become a real plus to potential customers.

My thoughts on the article in question was having read it are sony gonna do a dump on the ps3?

Meaning headstart next gen.

NO console is future proof.

True but some will be competitive longer than others. You have a BluRay drive should game developers need more space. You can insert any HD you want for more downloadable content or DVR functions. The CELL gives it a bit more room at the top and makes it better for video functions. Almost every PS3 has HDMI, WLAN and a HD included. I would say it is the best hardware package around although the 360 is no slouch either now that they seem to have removed the biggest hardware problems. We will see if the emphasis on casual games will continue to hide the fact that the base technology of the Wii is long in the tooth forever.

Sony will still release a successor to the PS3 in a few years while PS3 *might* continue to sell like the PS2 is now, hence they assume Ps3 will have 10 years

Microsoft will most likely move to Blu-Ray with the next Xbox

I actually dont think they will profcrab.

Microsoft stuck with DVD with the 360 for a very solid reason that doesn't have anything to do with Sony having a large stake in Blu-Ray, DVD was ready and didn't cost them any extra developement.  Blu-Ray will be cheaper and more mature by the time the next xbox comes out.  By the end of this generation, more and more developers are going to want more than 9.4GB for their games.  There is also the use of the system as a video player that some people like.  I will very surprised if they don't go to Blu-Ray, if not just for the size of the games.

I give that post a 9.5.

Thank god for the disable signatures option.

the way i see it, ps3 will sell as long as blu ray stays as the new standard format.

Well, Blu Ray won the format war and the PS3 still isn;t moving that well. People buy the product for it's main function: videogames.

I assum there will be a PS4 down the road and before Sony want's it. A lot of development is going to shift to the Wii and away from the HD brothers.

Does anybody besides me find it slighty (overwhelmingly) ironic to talk about how the PS3 is "future proof" in a thread about the PS4??
