The average wage in the USA is way higher than the average wage in the EU.
Check the CIA factbook (or the BBC website for an EU version of same) and you'll see.

The only problem is that in America wealth distribution is not as even as in Western Europe.
In America, more percentage of the population has minimum incomes and are much ower than the average Western European income... (could explain why Europeans can afford the crazy prices companies charge)
On average America is largely more wealthy, but the wealth is conentrated more in the hands of rich peope and corporations whie the average American is poorer...
Interesting fact that supports this: During the Bush years, the wealth of the top 1% of the popuation has grown by 11% per year whereas the rest 99% only saw an increase of 1% per year. (Google it if you don't believe me)
PSN ID: T_Gears
End of 2009 ltd sales:
Wii = 67-68m
X360 = 38-39m
PS3 = 34-35m
Prediction: The PS3 will surpass the 360 on weekly sales after it drops to $299 on all regular weeks (no big releases).

Well based on this site
http://www.taxadmin.org/FTA/rate/sales.html
california wins,
also this is the BASE tax (not the city or county added)
The site you have lists the average city/county tax added to the state sales tax.
i would expect them to be breaking even or getting a little bit of money from europe with the prices we pay

You almost certainly earn more, too. So quit your bitching. Like, for example, the French minimum wage is 8.71 Euros compared to the U.S. minimum wage of $5.15 |
minimum wag in the uk in dollars is $10.79 so we do earn alot more (double) but we pay alot more taxes ect for heathcare
| ChichiriMuyo said: "here in united states it is 7.25% for the highest tax state, california." I'm sorry, you need to do better research. 1 Tennessee 9.35% 2 Louisiana 8.70% 3 Washington 8.45% 4 New York 8.25% 5 Oklahoma 8.15% 6 Alabama 8.00% 7 Arkansas 8.00% 8 California 7.95% 9 Texas 7.95% 10 Arizona 7.80% And realistically, most of those are higher. I live in Arizona, and I typically pay more than 8% thanks to city/county tax. http://www.fairtaxation.org/facts/sales_tax_rank.php Anyway, VAT works in a totally different way than sales tax, so it's pointless to compare them directly. And on top of that, there is a difference in the buying power of a Dollar and a Euro. While conversion rates highly favor the Euro, meaning it's good for Europeans to travel to the U.S., basic costs of living are still practically 1 to 1 in most places. |
That really sucks. In delaware, there's no tax on electronics. I live in philadelphia. Most people here just drive down to DE to buy expensive electronics

It is possibly the oldest, easily the most profitable, surely the most vicious. It is the only one international in scope. It is the only one in which the profits are reckoned in dollars and the losses in lives"---Maj. Gen. Smedley Butler

That's to be expected as EU includes many Eastern European countries.

End of the line is that we cough up more than the average American. So we are allowed to keep bitching, thank you very much. |
and when the dollar is worth more than the euro again, which it eventually will, and we are still paying $400 for a ps3 and you are still paying 400 euros, can I make a huge bitch thread about how we are paying more? After all, if the dollar is worth more and they are priced the same, we are paying more right.
Sony is making money in Europe, no question. All the major consoles are produced mostly in China, which has seen its currency appreciate slightly vis-a-vis the dollar and decline slightly against the euro.
I'd caution against assuming the PS3 still costs $500 to produce (my guess is, they hit $400 this spring and will hit $350 this fall). Sony moved very, very aggressively on cost-reduction - as a hardware company, this is what they do. Right now, any losses they're making are a result of marketing expenses and rising shipping costs, but those costs hit all the console companies equally.
