Forums - General - Who here reads comics?

Back in 1993, I was a reader of Ultraverse (an imprint of Malibu comics). I would write them, and even though I never had a letter published, they would write me back! I sent in some drawings of characters I created (my designs sucked, btw), and they would criticise me. It was awesome. The guys from Malibu sent me a book called "How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way", and would even send me black and white photocopies of comics before they were released and ask me what I thought (it was called the Fan Advisory Network -F.A.N. for short). After about two years, Ultraverse comics was but a memory (Marvel bought Malibu). Still, provided me with some good memories, though.

Well, it's exciting to create somethng after so much time being idle.

Would you guys like to see sketches and how all this plays out?

I'm willing to show this entire process. After all this time of being a critic, I think it's time I laid my ass out for scrutiny.

Would love to see some sketches man :)

I'm actually working on a manga style project myself in my spare time outside the day job, but I'm still working on character designs and plot lines.  It's slow going since I've had so much extra unbillable work going on lately, but every other week or so I manage to put some time in :D

Here's my first attempt at sketching in approximately five years... I'm pretty happy with it. I'm surprised I even knew WTF I was doing after so much time away from drawing.

Second sketch... Hand getting a little more comfortable now.

Nice :) You need to get a tablet man :D

It took me a while to get used to, and I still need a lot of improvement, but wow, it was like night and day after paper.

It kinda sucks losing the tactile feel of the paper, but erasing and redrawing is so easy, and having your lines on different layers gives you so much flexibility. I could never go back to paper now

Nowadays I only read collected graphic novels. I read through Civil War and House of M. Both were excellent. I loved Superman: Red Son also. It was a geat twist to the mythos with a What If storyline involving Superman crash landing in Russia as a baby instead of Kansas, and him growing up to be a Soviet hero. The best on-going series out now is Y:The Last Man from Vertigo. It's about a world where every male on Earth dies instantaneously except one 20-something year old son of a Congesswoman and his pet monkey. It's a great comedic post-apocalyptic story where every woman is basically always at that time of the month. I recommend it to all.

@Rocketpig-Great sketches.

Tag: Became a freaking mod and a complete douche, coincidentally, at the same time.

Use to read DC and marvel but currently reading Y the last man.

I love comics and manga the best thing i read recently is planetary but life keeps me too busy from reading them as often as id like

I believe there's supposed to be a movie in the works based on Y the Last Man. I haven't read any of the comics (It's hard to jump into an ongoing series. It takes an amazing investment to catch up), but I hear the books are great!

@Rocketpig, great work on those sketches! I used to draw all the time, but as I began working more and more, drawing was one of the first hobbies that I gave up. Wish I'd stuck with it. Give us more, Rocketpig! I love hand drawn artwork!

I have a tablet... In California. I'm waiting for ProfCrab to ship it over to me so I can begin work in earnest. I'll have about a week to get comfortable with the entire process again.

I actually found myself waking up at 6am to sketch this morning... That's strange. My friends can attest that I am not a morning person.
