Forums - Gaming - What is a geek anymore?

i've been thinking that the idea of "the geek" has been dying for some time now. it used to be the antithesis of pop culture, a word to refer to people who engage in things that aren't exactly 'cool', or rather on the sidelines of the wave of mainstream media.

now in the age when video games are becoming the new wave of pop because of the gigantic success of the wii and the ds, movies going more and more into adaptations of popular comic books and game franchises and each blockbuster film actually getting a game released with it now, more and more of the 'cool' actors engaging in roles that used to be considered geeky, and popular sports personas actually admitting themselves to be hardcore gamers...

are we finally seeing the death of the negative ideas surrounding a 'geek'?

No...There will always be something that people will think that is uncool...

agreed. but what do you think is the new 'uncool' today, if not the aforementioned video games, comic books, etc.?

If you don't have the IQ of a roadkill squirrel, you are apparently a geek.

so you agree that the negative idea is dead? (you seem to say that a geek is intelligent and the non-geek is stupid)

hmm.. yeah. maybe.

however, with the 'cool' crowd writing biographies here and there (sports pros mostly), isn't it kinda ironic to say that reading is passe?

autobiographies are books. i mean, with the 'cool' people writing books, wouldn't it be 'cool' as well to read them?
